Oh, and if SJU keeps up its run, I think I'd prefer to just be on the opposite side from them in the tourney, be that the #1 or the #2 seed. I think it's entirely likely that they end up in the #3 spot and X ends up in the #6 spot, actually. And it's pretty crazy that the #3 seed is Xavier at 7-5, while the #6 seed is SJU at 7-6 -- those are nearly identical records, leaving lots of room for a lot of shifting between #3 and #7 (even G'Town at #7 is only another game back right now) between now and the end of the season.

Exactly! So #2 may be better than #1? Or not. Crazy.

FYP, but agreed on the compactness of the Big East's "middle class."
Al McGuire: "What is this?"

Al McGuire: "Well then take this one away and bring me the winner."

I'm pretty sure he was a Drake or UNI fan. I actually sent him a message through mvcfans and he asked what the tiebreakers were in the Big East. I posted a message here asking but no one responded. I think without knowing he couldn't help. If someone knows, I will pass it along and maybe he can produce some charts.

The tie breakers have ben as follows:

If just two teams:
1.) head to head
2.) if still tied, you work your way from top of conference down and see which team has a better record against top team first. If still tied you move down to second, etc.
3.) if still tied, I believe its a coin flip

If three or more teams are tied:
1.) A mini conference is created by the teams that are tied and the team with the best record within the mini conference gets the higher seed.
2.) If all are tied, I believe they also move to see the best record again from top to bottom.

1.) Creighton (11-2) (Creighton has head-to-head tiebreaker over Villanova after sweeping season series)
2.) Villanova (10-2)
3.) Marquette (7-5)*
4.) Xavier (7-5)
5.) Providence (7-6)*
6.) St. John's (7-6)
7.) Georgetown (6-7)
8.) Seton Hall (4-8)
9.) DePaul (2-10) (Head-to-head tiebreaker over Butler)
10.) Butler (2-10)

* = Marquette and Xavier split their season series 1-1. The next tiebreaker is record against the best team in the conference, then 2nd-best, and working your way down the table. MU and XU are both 0-1 against Creighton, both 0-1 against Villanova, and the next best team is Providence and St. John's tied at 7-6. PC and SJU split their season series 1-1, so going to the next tiebreaker, Providence is 1-0 vs. Creighton, and St. John's is 1-1, putting Providence in 5th place. MU is 1-0 against Providence, and Xavier is 1-1, putting Marquette in 3rd place.

Big East Tournament Wednesday
#8 Seton Hall vs. #9 DePaul
#7 Georgetown vs. #10 Butler

Big East Tournament Thursday
#1 Creighton vs. Seton Hall/DePaul winner
#4 Xavier vs. #5 Providence
#2 Villanova vs. Georgetown/Butler Winner
#3 Marquette vs. #6 St. John's

Yeah I posted a picture of the bracket so typing all this out was unnecessary.

Anyway, I also computed all tiebreakers and as of right now, Xavier wins the tiebreaker vs. MU and is the 3 seed. Xavier went 2-1 so far against Providence & St. John's, while MU is 1-1 against these teams. Therefore, Xavier wins.

Check out www.mvcfans.com/wp and you will see the probabilities charts he put together for the mvc site. It was fun to follow along during the last month or so of the year.

I am assuming you listed a typo and meant to say MU was the 4 and Xavier was the 3 as a result of tiebreakers. However, this analysis assumes that Marquette and Xavier both lose their next games to drop to 7-6. As such, the need to create a "mini-conference" with Providence and St. John's per the Big East's tiebreaking procedures is unnecessary at this present time as only two teams are tied at 7-5. While all teams will eventually play 18 conference games, as of right now, Marquette and Xavier are one-half game ahead of Providence and St. John's.

Accordingly, to tie-break Marquette and Xavier...
1.) Season Head-to-Head Record : Tied 1-1
2.) Record vs. Best team in the conference (Currently Creighton): MU 0-1, Xavier 0-1
3.) Records vs. 2nd-Best team in the conference (Currently Villanova): MU 0-1, Xavier 0-1
4.) Records vs. 3rd/4th best team in the Conference: (See Tiebreaker 1)
5.) Records vs. 5th-best team in the Conference (currently Providence): MU 1-0, Xavier 1-1. Providence wins their tiebreaker with St. John's after splitting their season series 1-1, so moving to the next tiebreaker, PC is 1-0 against Creighton, and St. John's is 1-1. At least at present time, MU and X's records against St. John's are irrelevant because the tie was broken with their records against Providence, who is in a higher position in the table than St. John's by the slimmest of margins.

So on the 5th tiebreaker, at least for now, Marquette is the 3 seed and Xavier is the 4.
Providence is the 5 on the second tiebreaker, and St. John's is the 6.

Hmmm, maybe you are right to compare Xavier and Marquette records against Providence only since Providence currently wins the tie-breaker against St. John's. However, I assumed records should be compared to both schools since they have the same record...but that assumption can certainly be wrong.

I'd kind of think you'd have the 3/4 tiebreaker setted first, then decide the 5/6 tiebreaker. So in this example, you'd compare Marquette and Xavier to both Providence and St John's. Then if Marquette 3, Xavier 4, us that to decide the 5/6 tiebreaker.
