They play on some small on campus gym the equivalent of a high school gym. I watched the Creighton women play a little there. It's too small.

Looks like Providence is tiring.

I'm just wondering if it's possible to expand that to something like the size of Carnesecca or the Pavilion? At least not have to have all of their games in the NBA arena.

Cotton was great the last 26 minutes of the game, but the rest of the Friars didn't give him enough support. PC on the outside looking in right now I'm afraid.

Georgetown's campus is a whopping 100 acres. No room for an on campus arena. They are getting rid of the tennis courts to make room for the the new Intercollegiate Athletic center, which is the first major athletic facility built on campus since 1951. lol. The women play in McDonough gym, which is basically a high school gym.

They reported 8K in attendance for tonight's game. But in a 20K arena, that leave a lot of empty seats. I was surprised to see that there were only 6,800 for the Creighton/St John's game last night. I thought there might be more. But it was so dark in the stands, it was difficult to see the crowd.

Not a dig at Georgetown fans, I know the arena is a hike from campus and alumni are spread all over the country but it is sad watching them play in front of so many empty seats. Too good of a program. Is say a 6-8k arena to use for lesser opponents even possible on campus? Again not a dig at Georgetown, just want to know if it's even discussed?

Georgetown cannot get an on campus arena. The neighbors hate Georgetown and the traffic in and out of Georgetown is already a nightmare at rush hour. It's just not feasible. Trust me this is a constant debate on Georgetown sites. It's just never going to happen. Building anything at Georgetown is a major hastle because the neighbors block any efforts to build anything. An on campus arena is a complete non starter.

This is likely to be Georgetown's worst attendance in years due to poor post season results, loss of Marquee BE match ups, and poor OOC home schedule. We played a great OOC schedule but all the big games were neutral or away. If the Hoyas can get to the second weekend you'll see attendance shoot back up. We also have Kansas returning their game next year, so I expect attendance to be going back up next year.

Anyway great game, very gutsy win by my Hoyas.

There is no chance that Georgetown will ever build an on-campus arena (or expand McDonough to host Big East games) for the men. The primary reason is that even if Georgetown has the space, it would never be approved by the neighborhood. Without getting into the intricacies of town-gown relations, Georgetown has a hard enough time even to get new academic buildings approved, let alone a building that would increase traffic in an already congested area of town filled with neighbors who probably wish the university didn't exist. Secondarily, the Verizon Center is owned by major Georgetown booster Ted Leonsis.

Georgetown has a small alumni base in the DC area (relative to what you might expect) and there isn't really a college team that dominates the local scene. Maryland has the most local support but even they have trouble filling their seats when their team is mediocre. DC is a strange sports scene for a variety of reasons and weekday attendance has always been a problem for the Hoyas.

As a Hoya fan, I'm used to it and it doesn't really bother me because it's the reality of where we are. Building the new Intercollegiate Athletic Center will be great for recruiting since our high school-style gym was the team's primary training center. An on-campus arena though won't happen.

Wow thanks for the info. Didn't realize the animosity between the neighbors and the school. Guess we're very similar in that respect since Radnor hates us. Nice win for the hoyas tonight

I always figured the D.C. sports fans were a little more fickle than many simply because of the transient nature of the city. People coming, people going, a large portion of the population moving in and moving out all the time. Such is the lot of a governmental hub, I'm afraid. You guys do generally pretty well all things considered. Marquette has been lucky that we have a very supportive city (especially when we are winning), and a neighborhood where we can easily build (Al McGuire center, new law school building, addition onto Sensenbrenner Hall, new Jesuit residence, etc). It's too bad that other communities can't see what a major plus it is to have these universities in their neighborhoods.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
