Conference standings thread

Postby dmac80 » Mon Jan 20, 2014 11:54 am

Power rankings seems to have fallen by the wayside as we see the teams playing each other night in and night out and we now have actual standings. So I thought a thread where we can update the standings and talk about who has moved up and down and the state of the conference might be worthy.

As of 1/20/14 here are the standings on (conf record):

1.Villanova (5-0) 16-1
-----------------------------
2. Creighton (5-1) 15-3
3. Xavier (4-1) 14-4
-----------------------------
4. Providence (3-2) 13-5
5. Georgetown (3-3) 11-6
-----------------------------
6. Seton Hall (2-3) 11-7
7. Marquette (2-3) 10-8
8. Depaul (2-4) 10-9
9. Butler (1-5) 11-7
10. St John's(0-5) 10-8

Surprises? Thoughts?

My surprises are that Marquette who was consensus #1 falling, and PC with their lack of depth playing their way onto the bubble. Also Xavier has played above what many thought thus far, and Georgetown has disappointed a bit. SJU has been a big disappointment based on their much talked about "talent"......Obviously injuries and personnel issues have taken a toll on many BE teams and that is typical.

Yes its way too early for the bubble talk in reality, but this is what we can talk about today.

8. Depaul (2-4) 10-9
9. Butler (1-5) 11-7
10. St John's(0-5) 10-8

Each team in relation to the Coaches Pre-season poll:

Nova : +3
Creighton : +1
Xavier : +4
PC : +2
Gtwn : -3
Marq: -5
SHU : +2 (tied in standing with Marq at 6)
DePaul : +2
Butler : 0
SJU : -5

Biggest Disappointments: SJU and Marq
Biggest Surprises: Xavier and Nova
About where we expected them in conference: everybody else (except maybe Gtwn)

My personal opinion

Biggest Disappointment - Marquette
Biggest Surprise - 'Nova

I didn't think 'Nova would have this type of a season. They play every game with a sense of urgency and they know better than to come in and think they have a guaranteed win.

Coaches poll had Marquette finish in 1st place. Haven't seen enough of their games to figure out what is happening but I surely wasn't expecting them to be grouped together in the lower half of the conference.

I can't fault Georgetown just because they lost a key player recently but when they were all together and healthy they, were definitely a top contender. If Smith doesn't come back, they'll surely end up on the bottom half of the conference. Anyone playing them now should start thinking about pressing them the entire second half. Their lack of depth is noticeable especially in the last 3 minutes when their guys start losing steam and start making mistakes.

I didn't have high hopes with St. Johns from the beginning just because of their coach. They have the athletes to be a great team but their coaching...oh man, A lot of times I'd just watch wondering what they were doing. A team like that should absolutely destroy Dartmouth but Dartmouth hung in there pretty good. When things go bad, Lavin seems to be OK with giving the green light to Harrison to do whatever he wants.

What was the result of this boards standings?

Waiter: "Mr. McGuire, that is a cull lobster. Sometimes when the lobsters are in the tank, they fight. This one lost a claw."
Al McGuire: "Well then take this one away and bring me the winner."
