Xavier-Georgetown 1/15/2014 X History Game

Postby xu1990 » Wed Jan 15, 2014 11:35 am

As my screen name might indicate I was around for the game that in many eyes changed the course of Xavier basketball.

The second round of the 1990 NCAA tournament, an unknown Midwestern Collegiate Conference based Xavier building an 18 point lead over a Georgetown team led by Alonzo Mourning, Dkembe Mutombo, and David Edwards. The Hoyas second half press getting to X and the Muskies hanging on for a 74-71 victory. I have vivid memories of floating out of the Hoosier Dome, calling my dad, and thinking what just happened? Monumental for the program.

The Hoyas extracted revenge in the 1995 Tournament. Some Iverson guy proved difficult for Xavier to guard, and a depleted due to suspensions Xavier team fell 68-63 (Long drive back from Tallahassee to Cincinnati). The teams have not played since.

Big game tonight.

I can still see the Aaron Williams put-back. Incredible. The future NBA star helped saved the day for us that day.

I think Creighton fans are very interested in how this game goes. I think the Creighton/X game showed that the two teams have a lot of similarities this year, and I'm curious to see how that matchup goes as maybe giving a little indicator of how the Jays might matchup. I am a big believer that games really come down to matchups, and that's one big reason you see some otherwise shocking upsets on a pretty consistent basis: often it's the result of a great matchup as much as talent or having an "off" or "unconscious" night for one team.

Personally hoping to see X win this one by a ton.

Should be a good game, I kind of want Georgetown to win this game. Reason being, the Big East bubble teams have shiat the bed already with SJU and Butler dropping out. That leaves Georgetown currently being on the right side of the bubble but if they lose this game, probably be right on it again. If Georgetown can't make the tourney, that would be a disaster with only 3 Big East teams in...

I think Georgetown could surprise in this game. If we had our full complement I'd definitely be picking us, but I think people are underestimating Georgetown in this match up. I think people will be surprised at our ability to contain Stainbrook on the inside. I see him as a Harangody, Cooly from ND type of below the rim big that we always had great success against.

It's funny to hear Georgetown may "surprise" in this game. I wasn't aware anyone had written them off.

Anyway, somebody has to pay for the loss to Creighton. Hope it's Georgetown.

All 3 of the national previews I've read: Cbs, SI, and bigeastcoastbias all have Xavier winning and not giving Georgetown much of a chance. The line is Xavier -6. It would be expected for the Home team to win this game between team with similar records even if Georgetown wasn't missing two starters.

Good game so far, both teams are feeling it, neither wanting to give up momentum.
