When you consider that Marquette took 27 three-point shots to Xavier's 13 (and plenty more mid-range jump shots too) and they also had to foul Xavier at the end, it makes a lot more sense. If you don't take it into the paint much, you're not going to be going to the line. And if you make your opponent shoot 10 FTs in the last 44 seconds, the free-throw disparity is going to grow.

Yes, any elbow above the head is automatically a flagrant 1. The announcers managed to annoy me in that situation despite my X fandom because they were whining about the intentionality, which doesn't matter. Actually, if it had looked intentional, it would have been a candidate for a flagrant 2. Pet peeve: Announcers that don't know the rules.

Another one from the game: Announcers, there are precise charge/block rules. It's just really hard to judge those borderline cases.

Good win xavier. I can't wait to get back to the Midwest time zone so I can actually watch our games again. This waking up and finding out we lost crap is getting really old.

Question for Marquette fans: While shaking Coach Mack's hand minutes prior to the beginning of the game, Mack pointed to the other side of the arena and Buzz went over and exchanged pleasantries with Mack's wife and daughter. He then went to the student section and shook hands with a bunch of students almost until the game started. Is this typical Buzz or should Xavier feel special?

It's hard not to like the guy.

I think that changed this year. Last year- 100% correct. But after last year I believe they changed that.

XU85, I noticed and appreciated the same thing. Also Buzz was non-stop action on the sideline for all 40 minutes (including the last three seconds when the outcome had finally been determined). Post game hand shake was pure class, especially after such a hard fought, close loss. Count me in his fan club as well.

Elbow rules
In men’s and women’s basketball, panel members approved a tweak to the rules regarding elbow contact above the shoulders.

In these circumstances, officials may use the monitor to determine if a flagrant foul has been committed.

Officials will determine if the contact was a flagrant 2, flagrant 1, common foul or no call. When the officials use the monitor to review a situation that is not called on the floor, the only options are flagrant 2, flagrant 1 or no foul.

In a flagrant 1 situation, the player who was struck is awarded two free throws and his or her team gets possession of the ball.

In a flagrant 2 situation, free throws and possession are awarded and the player who threw the elbow is ejected from the game.

The men’s and women’s basketball committees felt the original intent of the elbow rules have caused too many flagrant fouls being called when they weren’t appropriate. The intent of the elbow rule has always been to protect players and eliminate the rip move where players were making contact above the shoulders of defenders.

By allowing officials to review these plays on the monitor, both committees believe it will eliminate the non-deserving flagrant 1 fouls in particular.

If you remember last year in the tourney, had a ton of awful flagarant fouls called. Can remember just 3-4 awful ones..
