Taking a look at the Conference Frosh

Curious to hear how everyone is feeling about their 2013 recruiting class now that we are a handful of games in. My apologies to the PC fans out there b/c you seem yet again snake bitten, and can't seem to get all of these young, talented kids on the floor. I have ranked the top contributor from each school (except PC), and added a 2nd from schools that I think have had at least 2 major contributors.

Observations: It seems easier for guards to come right in and contribute. Cameron seems to be the biggest disappointment. What is going on with him Hoya fans? Also what is with R. Jordan's shooting? Under 30% is not good.

In terms of Nova we could not be happier with the play of Josh Hart. The kid is just a fantastic player in every facet of the game and has been the perfect off the bench energy guy that does a little bit of everything for us (including great defense). He might be our best all around player as a freshman in terms of D, rebounding, shooting, decision making, athleticism; he's very Kerry Kittles-like. Our fan base is pretty hyped about his future. His success has overshadowed Jenkins a bit who himself seems like a very good player. How is each fan base viewing their Frosh?

Our freshman don't play much. Zierden has contributed the most, plays SG off the bench and is a dead-eye 3 point shooter. I suspect he'll get 5-10 minutes/game max during conference play because Manigat/Brooks will eat up most of the minutes. Next year, he'll play alot. Hanson hasn't played much at all but has shown nice flashes the times he has played but there aren't much minutes when McDermott/Wragge/Artino are in front of you. He probably won't see a ton of playing time during conference play unless the other 3 are in foul trouble. He will play alot next year as well. Then we redshirted our two other freshman Hegner and Harris.

That list is solid IMO. A minor thing is I would have Sina ranked higher than Jordan simply because he's playing more lately and his play is determining wins & unfortunately some loses. Sina is in a similar position as BG Jr as far as game responsibility and getting better every game. Also Tommy Hamilton is now starting for Depual I believe and playing well. This class for the BE was not rated as high as next year's but a big part of the pub for 2013 included Austin...oh well.

I wonder what the list would look like if it included transfers like Gibbs, Harris, Brooks (CU), Desrosiers, Sanchez, Ennis, etc. Great thread though.

I can agree with that. Sina prob should be ahead of Jordan at this point. Forgot about Hamilton. Will edit both...

With Xavier, you have to remember that Myles Davis and Jalen Reynolds are technically freshmen too, even though they were originally in the 2012 class. Overall, this freshmen class is looking really good. Kamall Richards isn't really seeing the floor much at all and needs to give a better effort in practice. Jalen isn't producing at a high level yet, but he's doing some good here and there and you can see the potential. Myles is a fantastic offensive player, both directly, with his great three-point shooting (46.7%) and ability to also put the ball on the floor against closeouts and close defense, and indirectly, with his shooting forcing defenses to extend and pay attention to him. Randolph has also been a steady point guard, not turning the ball over much, getting some nice assists, keeping the offense flowing, and challenging defenses himself. His shooting hasn't been great, but he's supposed to be a better shooter than that, so we'll just have to wait and see. What is unheralded is his defensive effort; he is a fantastic perimeter defender, even as a freshman.

And if you're considering transfers, Matt Stainbrook has been awesome. His true shooting percentage is 55.5% while taking a high number of shots and he's probably the best passer on the team, working the ball out of the post for good shots on a number of occassions. On defense, he's really good at blocking and contesting shots, and he's one of the better rebounders in the country, #42 on defense and #74 on offense.

My favorite class coming into the year was definitely Nova's combo of Josh Hart and Kris Jenkins. Xavier made both of them priority targets, especially Jenkins, so I had followed a decent amount of their recruitment. They have lived up to my expectations and then some. They are going to be a load to deal with going forward.

I also was cautiously optimistic that the combo of Garrett and Hamilton could make an impact and it's good to see them putting up solid numbers.

Xavier's 2013 class was definitely not what we wanted originally but some things happened (ie Dez Wells fiasco) that cost us a few recruits (including Jenkins, depending who you talk to) and we ended up settling for Kamall Richards because we really needed a wing. He has looked less than impressive in the time he has gotten, gotten called out by Mack for not having the best work effort in practice and has already been over recruited with players like Bluiett and Macura. Brandon Randolph, we were told, was an absolute steal from California and it's hard to disagree. I think he still is working on his confidence when it comes to his scoring but he has the ability to be a GREAT on ball defender (already ahead of most freshmen in that category) and does a really good job taking care of the ball.

Good point. I know they generally enter as juniors, but JUCOs always seem to be more like freshman to me. It generally takes them at least a semester to get their bearings and learn to play a little defense (defense is usually unheard of at most junior colleges).

For Creighton, the returning vets are making playing time hard to come by for the new guys. Brooks is the one guy who I think could break through and be a difference maker in the Big East.

Josh Hart the only real elite player of this group. I think next year's frosh class will be much stronger.

The depaul freshmen intrigue me. Producing because someone has to score on a team that bad, or are they any good?
