Holy Land of Hoops Preseason Poll

Postby butlerway » Thu Nov 07, 2013 11:45 am

Several of our partners from various Big East blogs are coming together each week to form the Holy Land of Hoops Big East power rankings. These are done in the same manor as the AP or coaches poll. For the preseason version we have included brief write ups on all of the teams. Our initial rankings were just released, and can be seen below:

Very cool feature, I like how it will be updated once a week. Good stuff!

Perhaps the weekly updates can include a sentence about each team, similar to the NFL power rankings?

That's pretty much exactly how it will be. I've told all the partners to do a brief one paragraph writeup of 3-4 sentences or so for future rankings. We will have another ranking with a similar format to this one again the week before Big East league play begins.

Can I suggest to do one end of November? By then I think all 10 teams will have done their exempt tournaments, and by and large, the meat of the OOC schedules are done.

We will see how things are going and how popular it is and everything. Getting all of the content together from several different people turns out to be a little more difficult than it sounds in theory, so I don't want to make things too complicated. It might be running a little more smoothly by then though.

We will also look at different ways to get forum members involved as well. You may have noticed we took one forum members vote and write-up for this first one. We may include a fan vote for one of the ballots or do other things to make it at least somewhat interactive. The whole process will be flexible and we will adapt and try new things as the season goes on to try and make things interesting.

Is there a way to see how each person voted and what the final points were? I think that would be interesting to see. And if there was a way to have some sort of timeline for each voter and a cumulative ranking so you could see how teams rise and fall through the season? It's asking a lot I know, but love what you're doing.

Keep up the good work.

We won't be posting individual ballots on HLOH. I know I will be publishing own ballot on ButlerHoops.com. I've encouraged others to do the same on their website, but that will be up to them. I can definitely post the point totals though.

Here is my ballot. It actually varied a decent amount from a lot of the others. I ranked Marquette (they received 6 of 8 1st place votes) and Xavier lower than anyone else. I also placed newcomers Creighton and Butler higher than anyone else. I was kind of surprised I was the only one to give Creighton a 1st place vote, especially with a Creighton site voting.

Yeah, I think Xavier is in for a big jump in the rankings. I like what I've seen so far from this team. I believe X has the talent to finish in the Top 5 of the conference and so far, they have looked like one of the better teams in the Big East.

Creighton has to move up too.
