St. Louis, Dayton, RIchmond I think should be looked at first.

I think we should root AGAINST VCU... hate to see an A10 team ranked above any Big East team.

Richmond would be the worst decision we could possibly make. It would make us look so small minded to take a team from same city as VCU that hasn't done anything compared to VCU. VCU has as many wins since their final 4 run as Dayton has had in 29 years. SLU has 4 tourney wins in the last 56 years.

I repeat, we should not have a litmus test to get into the league. IT should be the best basketball programs, and there is no question that VCU is the best available by a long shot right now.

Prepare to be disappointed Stever20... VCU is not really in the picture, from what I have heard from the highest ranking sources at UR. It seems that it will come down to either SLU and Dayton or SLU and Richmond. SLU is basically a lock. Dayton is the better institutional fit with the best fan support for basketball, but a couple of the schools really want UR for the geographic balance and other reasons. Georgetown, Villanova and Xavier appear to be the strongest in UR's corner.

If VCU makes the sweet 16/elite 8/final 4 and we don't take them, we are complete and utter idiots. We would look so small minded and like we don't give a rip about basketball at all rather just be comfortable than be the best basketball conference possible. There is no reason why we should take Richmond over VCU on the basketball court at all. None.

And of course UR sources would be saying that. Even if they knew VCU was a major factor. They want to downplay VCU as much as possible.

You can put the history book away. I think they want teams that are going to be good going forward.

I like VCU and think they're far ahead of SLU/Richmond/Dayton if there is to be Big East expansion. VCU is the lock, and SLU/UD/UR are still somewhat in play.
Big East Basketball is what it's always been. Great competition nightly.
If the Atlantic 10 didn't suck, why is everyone looking for the exits?
There is a reason why the A-10 left a team in the Central Time Zone...SLU, your move.

Well Stever20, you can call the president of your university, Georgetown, and tell him. He is the one who most vehemently does not think VCU should be in the conference. He is also the biggest proponent of Richmond. And I was having a very honest personal conversation with my source, regarding the A10, Big East, Davidson, and VCU. The main reason that Davidson took so long to accept the A10's invitation was that Richmond could not in all honesty say they were completely committed to the A10, as they are fully in the mix for the 12 spot in the Big East. No bullsh-- on this particular one. Many of the presidents do not think that a school like VCU is particularly compatible with the rest of the Big East. I think they look at what ODU has done with football, and have some worry that VCU could eventually want to follow. VCU and ODU are very similar institutions historically. While I do not see VCU starting up football anytime soon, I think the presidents are looking much longer term than you are. But none of this seems to be happening in the near term anyways. So enjoy your first season as the new Big East and worry about expansion some other time..

I think the thing with the expansion may come quicker if we were to have a 1st year with only 3-4 bids and none really highly seeded, and VCU gets in as a 3-4 seed(with #14 rank, that's where they would be seeded)- and does some damage in the tourney. I think Fox would put a lot of pressure on the Big East to add VCU. I think for example- lets say a St Johns or Providence finishes 10-8 in conference and 19-14 overall and missed the tourney- I think that's going to cause a lot of the presidents to re-evaluate.

I just think at a certain point coming up pretty soon, it will get impossible to ignore VCU. Especially if the other options the Big East has are just not that good- which is where Dayton and Richmond are right now. I mean imagine what every basketball person would say if they take Richmond instead of VCU. Everyone would laugh their asses off. You can see the articles. Plus, that may drive VCU to the AAC, which really isn't in our best interests either.

I guess the question would then be 11 or 12.

I'm not what they'd call "in the know" as much as some, but rumblings around campus were that the former president was not too high on Dayton either. Not that it really matters anymore, that guy is long gone and the search for a new Pres is on.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

A little off topic, but Marquette should really give a call to Fr. Schlegel. He was most recently the Creighton pres and at U of San Francisco before that. He's a Jesuit, he's experienced and a tremendous fundraiser. He completely transformed our campus during his tenure and was well liked by the students, alumni, and the Omaha business community.
