In order to celebrate UConn’s seven-year absence from the Big East, I have compiled the following information so that Huskies’ fans who have been absorbed in the American Athletic Conference can see what happened in the Big East Conference while UConn was pursuing dreams of big-time football.

2020 NCAA Basketball Tournament

On March 12, 2020 the NCAA Tournament, as well as all other NCAA championships for the remainder of the academic season, was cancelled in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. It was the first time the tournament had been cancelled since its creation in 1939. The Big East called off its tournament at halftime during a quarter-final game between Creighton and St. John's. Most major conferences also announced suspensions of all athletics. Later in the day, the NCAA announced the Tournament would be cancelled.

Big East Benchmarks for the 2020-21 Season and Beyond:

If UConn is assumed to be a statistically average Big East team, the new benchmarks for the 11-team conference will be as follows:

Average number of Big East teams in the AP Top 25 Poll = (11/10)(17 teams/7 years) = 2.67 teams per year.

Average number of Big East teams in the NCAA Tournament = (11/10)(38 teams/7 years) = 5.97 teams per year.

Seven year from now, we can make apples-with-apples comparisons in order to determine the effect of UConn's addition on the average number of Big East teams in the AP Top 25 Poll and in the NCAA Tournament.

The New Big East vs. The Old Big East – Post #9

Considering the NBE has only been in existence for 7 years you would have to use a similar sample size for the OBE. Realistically, the OBE was only the dominant conference in the 80's. The 15 team super conference was a great regular season conference, but damn near every team but UConn would choke in the dance.

First, it was a 16 team super conference for 7 of those years.

So from 2005/06 - 2012/13 you can throw out Depaul, Rutgers, USF (1), Prov, SJU (1), and SHU (1) as they combine for 3 appearances so of the legit teams in that conference:

UConn 5 appearances; won in 11, FF 09, E8 06 = solid

Louisville 7 appearances; won in 13, FF 12, E8 in 08 & 09 = solid

Cuse 6 appearances; FF 13, E8 12, S16 09 & 10 = solid

Pitt 7 appearances; E8 09, S16 07 = choke

Marquette 8 appearances; E8 13, S16 11 & 12 = choke though not by much & two of those were due to injury

Villanova 7 appearances; FF 09, E8 06, S16 08 = solid but the last 4 years definitely choke

Georgetown 7 appearances; FF 07, S16 06 = choke

Notre Dame 6 appearances = choke

West Virginia 6 appearances; FF 10, S16 06 & 08 = solid *wasn't in conference during final year

Cincinnati 3 appearances; S16 12 = up in the air but I'd barely even call them a legit team during those 8 years

62 NCAA Tournament appearances with 25 times advancing past the first weekend - I wouldn't necessarily call it infamous for choking also need to factor in there were a few times where Big East teams knocked another Big East team out (ie: Marquette > Syracuse 2011, UConn > Cinci 2011, Syracuse > Marquette 2013).

Either way, it's difficult to justify calling that conference a bunch of chokers when we have Villanova's championships and just three other second weekend runs: 1 from Butler and 2 from Xavier in 6 tournaments.

NET RANKINGS 2020-21

The NCAA’s first release of their NET RANKINGS 2020-21 was published on Monday, January 4, 2021.

Further to Jet915’s January 4th post on the 2021 Rankings thread, below I have compiled a listing of the Top 50 teams in the NCAA’s first release of the NET Rankings, along with the Big East and Atlantic 10 teams that are not in the Top 50.

I intend to update this webpage again at the end of the regular season, and again on Selection Sunday.

Please use Django’s 2021 Rankings thread for NET Rankings updates and discussions, as this is a post is a Quantitative Reference for future comparison.

Gonzaga Bulldogs top first NET rankings with Duke Blue Devils, Kentucky Wildcats not in top 100 - Jeff Borzello, ESPN – Monday, January 4, 2021

For the most part, the blue bloods of the sport are nowhere to be found inside the top 50. Indiana is No. 51, UCLA No. 54, North Carolina No. 64, Duke No. 115, and Kentucky No. 144.

The Big Ten has been clearly the best conference in the country during the first half of the season, and that's reflected in the NET rankings. Four teams are ranked inside the top 11, and 12 of the 14 teams are ranked inside the top 51. Surprisingly, Michigan State is all the way down at No. 119, while Nebraska is No. 186.

College basketball rankings: Gonzaga tops debut of NCAA's NET rankings this season - Kyle Boone, CBS Sports – Monday, January 4, 2021

The season debut of the NET rankings -- the NCAA's own evaluation tool used by the NCAA Tournament selection committee to determine a team's resume -- has Gonzaga and Baylor at the top of its rankings in identical fashion as the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll. But some stark differences in the metric already have emerged, starting with Tennessee, which sits at No. 3 in the NET. It's a higher-than-expected ranking that comes two days after it took its first loss on the year.

The AP and Coaches Polls will update later on Monday but neither Tennessee nor Illinois were top five teams in either polling metric as of last week. The Vols were ranked as low as No. 7 in the AP Poll before a 20 point win over No. 12 Missouri and an 8 point loss to unranked Alabama this week. The Illini were ranked as low as No. 16 in the Coaches Poll and won their only game this week, which was a home game against Purdue. Michigan, Iowa, Houston, Texas and Missouri comprise the five teams that occupy the No. 6-10 spots in the NET.

Teams that have not been ranked in the AP or Coaches Poll but are now in the NET top 25 include Colgate (No. 16), Drake (No. 20), and Syracuse (No. 25).

Because the NET is a two-component metric that adjusts for net adjusted efficiency and also has a Team Value Index that ranks based on results and quality of opponent, it opens up the possibility for a more inclusive and holistic picture of the sport. Here is a look at the top 25.

NCAA tournament snubs Louisville, Duke among teams to turn down NIT - Jason Owens, Yahoo! - March 15, 2021

In the sports world, navigating COVID-19 amounts to an exercise in risk vs. reward. Selection Sunday put that calculation to the test, and Louisville and Duke found their line. It's the NIT.

After being snubbed for the NCAA tournament, the Cardinals declined their inevitable NIT invitation before it arrived. The school announced shortly after the NCAA tournament field was announced that it will not play in the NIT, where it would have landed a likely No. 1 seed.

Duke, which wasn't in the conversation for an NCAA at-large bid, will also turned down the NIT after failing to make the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1995.

St. John's, Seton Hall, and Xavier all agreed. Thanks, but no thanks to traveling to Texas during a pandemic for a tournament with minimal stakes attached. None of the teams that opted out were listed when the NIT announced its bracket Sunday evening.

Louisville, Colorado State, St. Louis, and Ole Miss were the first four teams out of the NCAA tournament. They will be selected as replacement NCAA tournament teams in that order if COVID-19 forces teams from the field to opt out by Tuesday. Only Louisville declined an NIT bid.

Louisville, Duke, St. John's, Seton Hall, and Xavier were replaced in the NIT field by Louisiana Tech, Buffalo, Dayton, Western Ky., and Mississippi State.

“The toughest conference in all of college basketball,” CBS analyst Grant Hill said on-air from the Big Ten Tournament, “I think it’s safe to say at least one will be here at the Final Four.”

The maligned Pac-12 is sending more teams to the Sweet 16 than the heralded Big Ten

The Pac-12 has been maligned as a basketball league in recent years, and the conference was robbed of the opportunity to show its improvement on a national stage in 2020, when the NCAA Tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But Monday produced a rather stunning reality: there will be four Pac-12 teams in the Sweet 16 and just one team from the Big Ten.

The Big Ten landed nine teams in the field of 68 and the Pac-12 landed only five. Four of the Big Ten's nine tournament teams were either No. 1 or No. 2 seeds, while the Pac-12's highest-seed was Colorado, which landed as a No. 5 seed. Ironically, the Buffaloes were the lone Pac-12 team to lose in the second round as they dropped a 71-53 decision to Florida State on Monday.

Another surprising element to the Pac-12's collective staying power in the Big Dance is that Arizona, one of the league's most prominent basketball schools, went through a self-imposed postseason ban this season that left it ineligible for the NCAA Tournament. But even without the Wildcats, the Pac-12 has proven to be stronger than expected.

The Pac-12, with its 9-1 NCAA Tournament record, is a big winner so far in this NCAA Tournament, and the Big Ten is an obvious loser.

2021 NCAA Tournament Records by Conference: Big Ten disappoints in March Madness - Jerry Palm, CBS Sports – April 6, 2021

The Big Ten had one of the all-time faceplants by a conference. Rarely has a league been so well-positioned to have a big tournament, yet it still fell flat. Of the five teams seeded to make the Sweet 16, only one advanced to that round. Good performances by the lower-seeded teams in the Big Ten helped to save a little face. Still, Big Ten teams won eight fewer games than expected.

The Big Ten is now the first league to put more than seven teams in the tournament and finish below .500.

This does not mean that the Big Ten was overrated. Teams earn selection and seeding based on what they do over a four-month regular season. The tournament, however, is a different animal. One bad day and you're done. The Big Ten teams that were selected earned it and were rewarded with seeds that they had earned as well. They just went out and wasted them.

NEW YORK (AP) Villanova has dominated the Big East over the last decade under the guidance of coach Jay Wright. The fourth-ranked Wildcats were the unanimous choice to win the conference in a preseason coaches poll released Tuesday. The team, which has won seven of the last eight regular-season titles, received all 10 first-place votes from the league's coaches. GumbyDamnit! – I don’t put much stock in preseason predictions, simply because there are too many significant unknowns about most teams. Dayton has 11 freshmen, a sophomore, and a junior this season – so no one was expecting a Top 50 team this season, but things are looking good for the Flyers during the following three seasons.

THE CONCLUSION

Fifteen teams were selected for this study (i.e. the 11 Big East teams plus 1. Gonzaga, 2. Kansas, 3. Dayton, and 5. Baylor).

What’s the difference between NET rankings and KenPom?

KenPom, which is a separate ranking developed by Ken Pomeroy, looks at several statistical formulas that come together to form the Adjusted Efficiency Margin for every team. The better Adjusted Efficiency Margin, the higher the team is ranked.

Essentially, the goal of Adjusted Efficiency Margin is to show how much each team would outscore an average college basketball team per 100 possessions. Pomeroy’s ranking system incorporates statistics including shooting percentage, margin of victory, and strength of schedule, to calculate each team’s efficiency independent of injuries or emotional factors in the game.

While NET uses offensive and defensive efficiency as part of its formula, there are still several other factors (game locations for example) that differ from KenPom.
