It's just amazing that McDermott goes out of his way to create an entirely new phrase while finding a way to make it insensitive to his players. Like dude, it's not even a known cliche. It was entirely created by him. How dumb can you be? There are thousands of sports cliches that you can use to inspire your team... and you resort to saying something stupid and insensitive like that? C'mon

I'm more mad at the level of stupidity than anything else.

What happens next will all depend on his players and how they feel about him. Everyone in this league will benefit from the players backing him and giving him a second chance (and apparently they did)... but who knows...

As a Creighton grad and season-ticket holder for decades, I am very troubled and embarrassed by this. Any decision going forward should be made with the best interest of the University in mind and the basketball program interests a distant second or third. My concern is that this paints the University in such a way that it appears diversity and inclusion and are not important. If applications for undergrads decreases because of something like this, change is needed.

At present, however, I do not believe the McDermott will be fired. I could be wrong, but there’s plenty of support for him in Omaha black community despite the anger and sadness this has caused them.

Here's the issue for Creighton:

If they dismiss McDermott, they lose one of their most successful coaches in program history, and a member that is clearly beloved by his players and community.

If they keep McDermott, there is zero doubt that this situation is used negatively in recruiting, and likely has some type of impact with a number of recruits moving forward.

It is a lose/lose for Creighton. However, the only individual responsible is McDermott. He put himself, the program and school in this situation, which is unfortunate.

The fact that context, intent, and actions no longer matter tells you everything you need to know about where we are as a country. Don Imus type stuff...now that isn't cancel culture. That is just pure hatred and glad he was fired for that. But getting into mind-reading about what Mac really thinks because he said something careless but not a slur or anything? That is cancel culture.

The only appropriate response is to fire him and hire a person of color to replace him. Anything less is straight up white supremacy.

If McDermott does step down, or is fired, or there is an agreed-upon mutual separation, does Porter Moser (Creighton, Class of 1990) became a shoe-in favorite? Ben Jacobson's name gets tossed around alot, but his teams are always so up and down; Creighton, at this point, could do much better. Darian DeVries, normally, would be a shoe-in; however, the school may decide to completely separate from the McDermott-era.

IF he gets fired, which I think is still pretty unlikely, I would almost bet it all that DeVries is hired. Yes, he did coach under Mac, but he was a Altman hire and is more of a Creighton guy than a Mac guy so I don’t think that hiring him would cause too many issues.

Still, I think we’ll see Mac back for the BE or NCAA tournament.

Saw an interesting suggestion in one article on the matter that the Jays may have deliberately waited until after the Nova game to announce the suspension - further prompting the question, would he still be coaching at the moment if they won and a regular season title opportunity was still on the table?

I'd venture to say no that's not the case (unless this indefinite suspension only removes him from 1 game) considering it still hurts their chances of winning a couple much more prestigious awards.

Everyone agrees that what he said was bad and no one has heard that reference used- it's not a Midwest thing ( as someone asked). The most important piece here is that Mac is no racist. All of the local people that I've heard from directly and in the press, both black and white, including politicians, players, coaches, all have said they have not witnessed ANY instances of Mac and any racial insensitivity. This is over the course of the 11 years he has been at Creighton. Add in all his other years of coaching, and there is nothing negative about his character. To me that is the most important aspect to this. If universities and people in general are too afraid to stick up for someone or something they truly believe in because they don't want to be the next one attacked, things are going to get even worse. The media is the major problem we have in this country, always trying to drive a wedge between people based on identity politics. To take a one time mistake and try to paint the person, and more importantly, the University as a racist institution is absurd.

Just so I have this straight, if you only get caught doing the racist thing 1 time, you aren't a racist? Pretty sure if you get convicted of doing the criminal thing 1 time, you are a convict and a criminal. Why does he get a pass here? How many times does someone need to be caught doing the racist thing before they are a racist?
