Off Topic - Best Thing You've Bought in last 12 months

Postby GumbyDamnit! » Tue Jun 23, 2020 9:05 am

Man, between the Covid, BLM, the economy and the no sports to watch, Gumby, Mrs. Gumby and the little Gumbyettes, are running out of things to talk about. Thank God for sites like HLOH as an escape.

So was thinking about all the fun things I'd go out and do and great things I'd buy when this all passes over (I'm more of a in-person, experiential shopper instead of the Amazon monopoly buyer). And it got me thinking...what are those products that you've purchased recently that you look at and say: "Damn! I LOVE this."

I'll start... bought a pellet smoker about 8-9 months ago. It is the new love of my life. My wife jokes that if she'd allow it, I'd bring it inside the house and dedicate an extra room just for it so we could spend more time together. Yep. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. I wake up at 2:00 AM on a Saturday morning, season a brisket, throw it in and by early afternoon we are feasting on some of the best BBQ I've ever had. And I did it in my own automatic smoker, in my back yard, with little effort. Set it and forget it. It's awesome. I shop now and the first question I ask is: "Can I smoke that?" If you like ribs or BBQ chicken or anything else, get yourself one of these. Best purchase I've made in 5-6 years easy.

What else? Any good electronics? Apps? Tools? Appliances? Subscription services? Cars? Bikes? What do you got HLOH brethren?

Nioh 2. It's a PS4 game that I've spent over 300 hours on so far. Helped me get through a little more hermit lifestyle.

I was thinking of getting a smoker. I've been smoking bbq ribs with a smoker box, just doesn't produce enough smokey flavor. What brand did you get?

I"m ready to pull the trigger on a Traeger. Gumby, if that's what you bought, then feedback please.

I've also been thinking about getting a dedicated smoker. I use my Weber kettle grill as a smoker on occasion, but maintaining temperature on that for hours at a time can be a bit of a pain. Certainly not "set it and forget it."

As far as best thing I've bought recently, probably my electric brew kettle. One benefit of the lockdown has been more homebrewing time.

I'll add my hearty endorsement of a smoker. I use the wood from trees on my property to smoke, so it adds to the manly outdoorsman appeal.

And before you serve your family, you can secretly pull off a piece of meat dripping with juices. Eat cave man style!

A house.

If you had asked more than three weeks ago then it would've been: Tullamore Dew 18yr Single malt it is quite exquisite.

Coach Mac also endorses a smoker, according to Doug:

Grilling out has become a big factor in the McDermott home during the coronavirus pandemic.
“Dad has really got good at grilling now that he has a smoker,” the son said. “I think he actually likes grilling more than basketball.”

Had a $500 Lowe’s Gift Card burning a hole in my pocket so I found this one. Have two buddies with Traegger’s and they’re great too. Seeing both, they’re similar in features. Traegger’s will sell at a slightly higher premium. Newer models can tie into a mobile phone app that allows you to manage everything from your couch. I’ve cooked just about everything you can imagine in that thing. I smoked a homemade pizza on a pizza stone in it last weekend actually, and it was tremendous. You will not regret the purchase.

Nice. Waffling between being a Bourbon guy and a Irish Whiskey guy. Bought a bottle of Midddleton’s 20 yo. If that’s what whiskey is supposed to taste like then I’m all in. Smooth as a Kris Jenkins jumper.
