Cincinnati just cut their men's soccer program. Beginning of mass athletic department cuts around the country?

Sounds more like an excuse to cut sports to funnel more money into FB

Hopefully this situation doesn't stretch nearly that far but...imagine if fall sports are lost? Losing football revenue could be devastating to many P5s (and P6 wannabees).

In 2019, according to its most recent NCAA financial report, Cincinnati spent about $68.8 million on athletics. About 43 percent of that money came from "direct institutional support," such as student fees, tuition, tuition waivers and endowments not earmarked specifically for athletics. According to the report, the men's soccer program had operating losses of $726,498.

The AAC is now down to six members for men's soccer. If any of the other programs drop, they would be below the threshold of minimum standards for NCAA recognition. Now, the G5 is petitioning the NCAA to void the requirements for minimum number of sports, attendance figures and opponents (likely in the name of football), so perhaps it all becomes moot.

I fear what our respective athletic programs will look like in coming weeks. Thankfully, we don't have football funding all of our other sports. However, we did miss out on one big pay check from the NCAA for March Madness (in addition to tournament credits).

Do we think any BE programs are at risk too?

So Val couldn’t cancel the tournament until NYC told her to which was required for the Big East to collect on their insurance policy. I had not seen that published previously.

It was a good decision to have event cancellation, particularly given the importance of the tournament revenue to the league. But just as important has having the coverage is understanding the terms and following those terms so that the league could collect on the policy.
