NCAA Top 16 Reveal

Postby Hall2012 » Fri Feb 07, 2020 10:42 am

The NCAA reveals its current top 16 seed lines tomorrow and the Big East certainly has a chance to be well represented.

If I remember correctly from last year, NET didn't seem to be a huge factor in getting into the tournament (some teams with pretty strong net ranking were left out), but once in the seed list seemed to follow it pretty closely.

If that stays true, it looks like we should expect to see 3 of our schools listed with an outside chance of Creighton or Marquette making it 4. Though by the same logic is suppose there is a chance of one of our schools getting snubbed, leaving us with only 2.

It obviously means little in terms of the actual tournament, but claiming 25% of this reveal would be a great look for the league. Even 3/16 is really solid for a 10 team league.

like I said on the bracketology thread- will be interesting to see where they place Seton Hall. Do they leave them in NYC even at a 3 seed? Or are they shipped out a la Nova a few years ago?

Biggest Takeaways from the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee's Top 16 Reveal – Keyy Miller, Bleacher Report – February 9, 2019
Those of us in the bracketology industry were curious to see how the committee would use its new ranking tool, and these are the five biggest takeaways from the reveal:

1. Quadrant 1 Wins Are Still Huge

2. Conference Records Don't Matter

3. Player Absences Are Being Considered

4. Road Records Are Important

5. The Committee Loves NET

There were a couple of noteworthy differences between the committee's seedings and the NET rankings. But unless there's something about a resume that jumps off the page—such as a bunch of Quadrant 1 wins or an unsightly strength of schedule — it seems like the committee is more or less going to default to the NET rankings.

Twelve of the 16 teams have a NET ranking within two spots of where the committee seeded them, and three of those teams are in the same spot on both lists. The No. 1 seeds are all in the top four in NET, and all eight Nos. 1 and 2 seeds are in the top nine in NET. We'll have to wait until Selection Sunday to see if that adherence to NET carries all the way to the bubble, but it does seem like the committee is more hesitant to disregard NET than it was RPI.

In order to satisfy my own curiosity, I compiled the numbers in January. You can draw your own conclusions.

So Seton Hall 11, Villanova 12, and Butler 15....

The committee had Indianapolis open for Butler at 15, but shifted them out east. Really think for Butler for Indianapolis- if they're not a 1 seed, they won't be going to Indianapolis. Same with Seton Hall in MSG.
