Not really sure why Nova fans are bothered by the "not in Philly" comment. It's not an insult, it's just fact. You can still claim to be a Philly school, plenty of pro teams claim a nearby city when they're really in the suburbs too. The Giants, the Jets, half of MLS, etc.

I don't think any Nova fans are bothered by it. Nova isn't technically in Philly. Just as MSG isn't in Queens. Both the "Nova isn't in Philly" argument and the "St. John's isn't in Manhattan" argument are stupid.

It takes about as long to commute from Queens to MSG as it does from Nova to the WFC. I've made both trips.

Also, I know there's a common perception that Nova gets all the calls. Quite frankly, as a Nova fan, I don't really care if that's the perception. Most of the teams people accuse of getting all the calls (Duke, Patriots, UNC, etc) are the ones who are the most dominant franchises in their sports/leagues. If that's how Nova is perceived (and it should be), I have no problem with that.

Cool, but we're still in NYC and NYC is way bigger than Philly.

Dude, I don't think you are getting that I grew up not so far from St. John's campus in Queens, about a 15 minute drive, I have had a few relatives and several friends attend the school, not to mention I know people who live in the area. I also lived in Manhattan for 8 years.

Yes, on paper, St. John's is in New York City, people know what the five Boroughs are, you didn't need to post a map. Was that for real by the way? In reality though, like I said before, you are a hell of a lot closer to being New Hyde Park than Manhattan. Nobody is coming to "NYC" and visiting that area of Queens. They just aren't. If it makes you feel better to keep saying SJU is in NYC, that is fine, but most people I know say SJU is in Queens, not NYC, because people who are actually from the area know when you say NYC, you are talking about Manhattan, not Queens. Nobody I know says they are going to NYC if they are heading to Brooklyn or Queens, they just say they are going to Brooklyn or Queens. Why you need to is kind of humorous at this point. Like you are trying to turn it into something it isn't to make yourself feel better.

SJU is a great school, pretty campus, great law school, etc., but it is still in F'ing Queens.

Also, I don't know a single person who went to Villanova who truly gets "bothered" if you say Villanova isn't in Philly. It is The Mainline, or Mainline Philadelphia, but if you try to explain that to people it can make it more complicated than it needs to be and that is why people just say it is in Philly. I always say it's right outside Philadelphia, which is an accurate description.

Not bothered by it. I'm proud of our place in Philly hoops traditions and all, but Nova's a suburban school and that's not a negative in my book. Our student body is probably less "Philly" by a significant margin compared to other Division 1 schools in the area. Maybe except Penn.

I always say Radnor Township...cause there's a Dunkin' Donuts close by.

Things are heating up in the fantasy league. Hooligan is attempting to pull away from the pack. PuxMex is giving most of us fits...they are currently #2.
Oscar's Jarocho team had risen to 1st, now fallen back to 5th, and this week look to pull back up into 3rd. Old git is struggling to hold onto 3rd.
Getting interesting - the top 4 make the playoffs come March.

Adidas is making adjustments and trades to try and stay in the top 4...currently 4th. Gonna be fun.

Good, then give Drexel your Big 5 spot and beef up your OOC schedule

Joking, I don't really want to open up that can of worms.

Oh man, I can't even tell you how torn the fanbase is about the Big 5. Rollie got rid of it, and Jay brought it back. I understand what Jay was doing, he wanted to be classy and he wanted to restore our Philly ties, and at the time it seemed like a good move, but the gap has widened to the point where we are rolling through these teams most years. Back in the day it really wasn't that bad. When Jameer and Delonte were at St. Joe's and a few years after it really was fun, now it is completely uninteresting. Every other Big 5 team this year is awful. I was all for the Big 5 for awhile, was almost hoping we would play a game or 2 at The Palestra every year, but now, I really wouldn't care if it ended and we played 2 of those teams every year. Like St. Joe's and Temple one year, and UPenn and LaSalle the next, and just keep alternating.

I know you said you were Joking, but whenever I get a chance to vent about the Big 5 I take it. GO PIRATES!

I was thinking I didn't want to derail this thread, but I guess that's already happened with the location stuff.

To be honest, I completely agree with you that at this point, it would be beneficial to Nova to leave the Big 5 but still schedule a Philly school or 2 every year to keep those relationships (and those games are good for the fans, especially if they can schedule the ones that appear to be less of mismatch). But I also understand the history of the Big 5 and how important it is to Villanova and Philly hoops in general. This solution allows Nova to continue the tradition of playing their Philly rivals while adding some flexibility to their schedule and the existence of Drexel (who I can't imagine would decline an invite) gives Villanova the opportunity to withdraw without blowing up the whole thing.
