College Basketball Imperialism Map

Someone's been doing this at reddit for a few years and I find it pretty fun, especially when Big East is represented all over the map. The latest update has us trailing only B12. Nova, Georgetown, and SJU with huge real-estate, and Marquette with a sliver. The ACC has lost all its land.

*edit* tried to post the map as suggested by django but the image is too large. but i replaced the original reddit thread link with a much sharper image source

Is there any rhyme or reason to it? I mean I live on Long Island and it's St. John's, Villanova, Providence, G'Town, etc. I don't think I have ever heard anybody mention Oregon basketball on Long Island in my life.

It starts with each Div 1 team 'owning' a number of counties - every time one team beats another that team takes all of the land owned by the defeated team. (Defeating a team that has already lost all of their land gets you nowhere.) The games are 'winner take all' so once pieces of land are tied together under one 'flag' they will never be separated.

1/16 update for Seton Hall fans:

This is just going to get passed around between BE teams. The only way to lose it before the NCAAT is if Nova loses to Temple while holding them.
