Michigan got poached and other big teams like Cincy also got poached. Big East didn't get poached by anyone and would've been fine if Cooley left.
I agree Cooley should be given benefit of the doubt here. It's a major outlier year for them. It sucks but it happens.

Given that last year Providence had their worst year in 5 years, is this a major outlier year?

Yes. Last year they still made the NIT.

Losing Cooley in June would've been a disaster for the Friars program, and would've made the conference look like sh-t.
And any major coaching decision or serious assessment made about a guy due to a bad 2-week stretch in November, in his 9th year as coach, and who's had great success, would be nuts. Especially a coach who has rebuilt the program from the scrap heap, has made 7 postseasons, won a Big East tournament, and who runs a clean program with fantastic kids. Over the years, he's lost out on top level talent due to whorehouses in Louisville, and Kentucky and Kansas and NC State and others paying players, etc. Throw in the huge factor that he's coaching in his hometown, and has lived through the ups and downs of Friars history, and he should be given a lot of leash.
