Well it ain’t Hurley. Was kind of hoping to have Bobby on the sideline.

Bobby Hurley passed on St. John’s in the wake of Chris Mullin stepping down as head coach, agreeing to a five-year extension to stay at Arizona State, a source confirmed. The question is where St. John’s and athletic director Mike Cragg looks next now that their top option is no longer a consideration.

St. John’s began talking to Iona coach Tim Cluess on Wednesday night and again Thursday, sources said. The discussions have given Cluess the impression he’s St. John’s top target, though school sources have said the search remains open.

ASU just had more money. They aren't a good program or a destination...just had more money. Being away from NYC for 30 years has made Hurley a pansy. Let ASU enjoy mediocrity for around 3 million. We will take Cluess who is not the sexy pick but is the smart pick. He's the value pick and we will save tons. 10/12 seasons as head coach he has won 20+ games and 1 of the 2 years he didn't he won 19. Never had a losing record and his teams did very well in the conference tournaments. The big concerns are: lack of defense and recruiting.

Not a fan of Cluess for St. John's. His teams aren't good defensively and his best 2 seasons at Iona were with Kevin Willard's players. He gets to the dance often because the MAAC is so bad, but doesn't do it dominantly enough to get a decent seed.

Hopefully he proves me wrong and winds up being successful (if he does indeed end up at SJU), but his name came up quite a bit on the SHU boards when it looked like Willard may leave and the general response was "hard pass."

looking at Iona- they in 2018 had 11 players according to Ken Pom. Of those 11 players, only 2 players played in the 2019 season for Iona.

I think one thing that St John's fans would like is how Cluess teams don't foul much. They were #66 this year in defensive ft rate. In all but 2 years, they've been in the top 100. Consider with Mullin- St John's was never better than #209, and this year was #322. Always seemed watching St John's this year like they were in foul trouble.

I wonder if Phil Marteli has been considered for St. john's. I realize he is older but I think he would be a good pick.

that would be a terrible look IMO for St John's. Guy gets canned at St Joe's in a much lower conference, and then you hire him?

Winners win. And that's all I got to say about that.
