I actually think this is a great idea. The simple fact of the matter is that it is about New York and a NYC school.

After getting through the initial b/s dialogue and media noise about selling your soul versus being forgiving, let the man settle in and turn St. John's around, while also providing a bump to our Fox TV ratings.

How much gas does he have left in the tank? That's the question. Or, at the very least, can he build a solid (ethical and moral!) staff that will help deliver recruits and position coaching, etc.

It's been a while St. John's. GO BIG OR GO HOME should become the search motto this time around.

a Catholic school would never hire Rick Pitino. I wouldn't mind.

Catholicism is all about forgiveness though. In some ways, St John's might be his best possibility at coaching again. It'd be really entertaining w him returning to MSG. For the conference it would be fantastic. Then again, poaching Hurley from a P5 football school would be great optics.

Billyjack - we are on the same page here as I was going to write a similar thought regarding the Catholic faith. Unfortunately, in Pitino's case, he does not appear to be remorseful or penitent at all. I think that's a big part of it. If he announced that he had some wrongdoings in his personal and professional life, but was working to move past them and was sorry for committing such acts, Pitino would be a slam dunk hire.

No way would I take Pitino in Omaha. Omaha isn't big enough to contain the man's ego. Even if he took a job here some day when McD moves on the bigger and better, Pitino would soak the University for millions, and blow out of here quicker than a bomb cyclone.

He wants the federal prosecutors and the FBI to apologize first and thats before we even talk salary, which even if we pay him half of what he was making at Louisville (7.5 million) would be almost 4 million a year. He isn't coming, he's using us to get publicity so he can grind his axe.

I think Pitino is using us for a publicity stunt.

Probably. But SJU alums working at DOJ, SDNY should press for a generic apology, just in case.

I hear Omaha is renaming it's Near North Side (just north of downtown) to "Bayville" to entice Pitino Sr.

They should push their agency to make an apology? Yeah, i'm sure they'd put up their own professional capital to fight for that cause. hahaha

Looking like Tim Cluess could get the job.

No need for remorse or penitence since Pitino did nothing wrong. Hire him.

I’m actually warming to this....some of the comments from NY high school coaches are encouraging....would be nice to have an alum who also has head coaching experience....

compared to the last few St John's hires, this would be the most unsexy one in a long time. Which I think in a lot of ways would be a great thing for St John's.
