This is a shocking hire in my opinion. Can't imagine the UCLA donor / fan base is very excited about it.

What? How is Hurley not good enough? Who should the Johnnies target, Coach K?

Besides Pitino, there aren't any other big names out there.

Also, we just saw how UCLA spent a bunch of money ($24 million/6 years) on their #4 choice. If St. John's can get their #1 choice then consider it a major accomplishment.

Agreed...but this is what happens when you spend time chasing coaches that were not going to UCLA. You end up with Cronin.

And then Guerrero comes out and says, "Cronin was at the top of the list the whole time." Good luck in Westwood, Mick!

If we were all in an office together, I'd start a "pick the date UCLA starts its next head coaching search" pool.

I wouldn't consider an elite 8 taking that next step to flourishing. Just compare that stretch from 1990 to 2013 to the 20 years prior from 1970 to 1990

St bonaventure, Nova with 2, Georgetown with 3, Marquette with 2, St Johns, Seton Hall, Depaul. Plus MU Nova and GTown all won titles. If I were doing an analysis in 2013 the indication would be it was much less likely than it used to be at a non football school. If I'm doing an analysis now, I realise that football doesn't control basketball and it just randomly happened that non football schools weren't making final fours anymore.

all i meant was that you could've reasonably concluded both that it was becoming harder to win at non-football power 5 schools or that it was simply a lull following an extremely successful period. that 13 year stretch is a definite outlier when you look at the history of catholic basketball

This debate aside, do not lose sight that Buzz used whatever logic, or reasons, he needed to in order to justify taking the Virginia Tech job. Many coaches use whatever beliefs they have in order to sell their new job, and this was no different.

Odd hire for a number of reasons. Cronin flirted with UNLV a few seasons ago before deciding to return to Cincinnati. Honestly, I would have thought that Virginia Tech would have been a better "fit" for him professionally; he has long-standing relationship with their AD, simply getting to the tournament would be treated as successful for their fan base, and you would coach in one of the most competitive leagues in the country. UCLA has zero tolerance for not getting deep runs into the tournament (which has been a knock against Mick for many years). Regardless, he will be paid handsomely for the next six years. It will be pivotal for him to hire strong west coast recruiters as assistants.

I wonder if Cincinnati would be interested in Thad Motta. John Brennan and Matt McMahon will likely be the favorites for that position. Nick Van Exel could be a dark horse.

And Hurley would be a home run hire for the Johnnies. That wouldn't even be a debate.
