A Review of St. John's

While they got to the tourney, I just can't help but be disappointed in the Johnnies. I believe they were the most talented team in this league and they definitely didn't perform like it often this season. The good news is they'll still be a very talented team next season and a lot of good players are coming in. But Chris Mullin didn't impress me at all this season. He's lost me and it appears he's lost a good chunk of his St. John's base.

The eye test doesn't lie. Mullin can't and doesn't coach. Time for him to step aside.

Most of the issues that bogged down the Johnies could've been fixed with coaching.

I like Mullin, but I think he needs to be hands-on with the team!

All season long they played sloppy, turnover prone, undisciplined, failing at big time plays resulting in even more turnovers...

Also, I wish the Johnies had a team leader that would hype the team in needed times. I noticed last night how one of the players (can't remember who...) tried to bring the guys together into somewhat of a huddle and there wasn't much of a team connection. That's a shame man.

On top of all those issues, he doesn't have a true system. The majority of the time this team plays helter skelter playground ball and they continue to do the same sh*t all game long. No adjustments and iso ball. They don't move without the ball properly, very little back screens, give and go's and so forth.

He's not going to just get better at these things after 4 years of doing the same thing. Insanity. He clearly thinks he knows what he's doing and yet the most casual observer can see this is not the case.

He needs to go or hire a real coach as his top assistant. Much rather he be gone because if he stays he'll still have his imprints on the team which have not been good.

It's painfully obvious we're paying a guy $2 mill a year for a no-show job he doesn't even eat, sleep, and breath. It's more like a pet project. I don't want our program to be a pet project. I want it to be someone's baby. I would never question this stuff with Ed Cooley. We have our coach on Barstool videos tying his shoes during timeouts while an assistant talks to the team. It's embarrassing.

An interesting point that Zagoria brought up is the future of Matt Abdelmassih with St John's. His old boss at Iowa St was Fred Hoiberg. If Hoiberg is back at Nebraska as rumors say, does he reunite with his former boss?

And this quote from the article pretty tough but probably true for St John's- “Matt is the glue that keeps the program together,” one source close to the program said. “If he leaves, it will set the program back five years.”

While there were some really good moments this season, the team never was able to build any momentum off any of it. Talented? Absolutely. But it seemed like at times they were not up for games and came out the gate without energy. The lack of size was a killer. I liked this team, but this was probably the most disappointing season we've had simply because of the flashes of how good they could have been . Good luck to the rest of the teams still alive.

I get angry because a strong SJU would be good for the league. Your recruiting philosophy is clearly not working but there is no end in sight. If I were a St. John’s fan I would be fed up. You will never build anything until this changes. Is it not blatantly obvious at this point?
