Another day, another recruit coming! 6'8 200 lb kid who originally committed to Iowa State and had interest from other major schools. Shoots 41% from 3. Can play immediately. 3 years left!

Darien Williams to St John's

Postby hoops22 » Thu Apr 09, 2015 10:03 am

Another signing by Mullin today, 6'8 wing Darien Williams, who will be eligible to play next season. He had been let out of his committment to Iowa St, and had been recruited by Louisville, Kansas St and Nebraska before that. Mullins also meeting with Sampson today, so hopefully there's more good news to come.

I know the competition at the JUCO level is depleted lately, but still, those are some good numbers:

16.1 ppg
6.7 RPG
51% from the field
40% from three
Gangsters in the locker room

Chris Mullin is going to be a tremendous hire for the Big East. He will need to learn his craft as a head coach, but his recruiting is already paying dividends. It will be tremendously fun to watch over the next several seasons.

BIg man who can shoot. Seems like a good get. I know Mullin wants Sampson back, how many other scholies are open? They had a couple other commits, I'm assuming they've been released??

Mullin is wasting no time and picking up some very good players but sometimes when you throw around a bunch of offers you miss out on the big fish because the 3 star guys commit before the 4 or 5 star guys and fill up the barn before the 4/5 star guy can commit.

Don't get me wrong. Mullin is proving players want to play for him but he was hired like a week ago. I think he has more time to see where the big fish will end up before starting to take commits like this one.

Like Tariq Owens, Williams was a 3-star recruit coming out of high school and continued to be rated a 3-star as a JUCO. Neither of these are block Buster recruits for St. John's, but they certainly due create a sense of momentum for Mullin. High school kids considering the Red Storm are now seeing a lot of the question marks removed as Obekpa and Jordan announce that they are coming back while Williams and Owens lend some more veteran presence to the program. These are good moves, hopefully to be followed by a true blockbuster like Diallo.

One further point. Williams is from California. I have to think that having someone with the stature of Mullin and with his NBA credentials had to be a factor in Williams' decision. Anyone doubting his pull outside the Northeast just has to look at this recruiting "get".

I think a key part of it is the fact that he's coming in to a depleted roster. Look at the St John's/ SDSU tourney game. The 4 departed seniors played 39 minutes- all 4 of them.

Seems like Coach Mullin can recruit and if he can coach, St. Johns can be really good. Creighton hired Willis Reed as HC in the 80's and boy were we excited! He recruited one of the top, if not the top, players in the country. Turned out Willis wasn't a very good coach! With Coach Mullin's
experience as a player and exec in the NBA, I would expect a result like Fred Hoiberg. Has to be fun for the fans!
