Friday beat North Dakata 3-1. North Dakota was picked third in the Big Sky conference and returns seven letterwinners from last year's team that tallied a school-record 26-wins.

Saturday beat Dayton 3-1. Dayton won the 2014 regular season and Atlantic 10 Championship and returns last year's A-10 Player of the Year senior Alaina Turner,

Saturday night MU team bested No. 21 Iowa State in straight sets, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 26-24) on Saturday evening at the Hilton Coliseum to close out the opening weekend as winners of the Cyclone Invitational. The Cyclones are coming off their ninth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Volleyball Championship, advancing to the second round before falling to No. 10 Illinois.

I'm not the authority on Creighton volleyball, but we are breaking in a lot of new players and the early part of the season might be a struggle. We won on Friday over Miami OH, but lost yesterday to Louisville and #8 Illinois.

Plus we're dealing with several injuries. Why we always have injuries at the beginning of the season, who knows?

I don't know why the current Big East Conference seems to have little support and very modest success in women's volleyball. However, I hope that, as the popularity of volleyball seems to be growing nationally, the sport will grow in the Big East as well. It's a fun sport to watch, especially up close in person.

* I live in Omaha and attend most of the home games at Creighton and am enjoying watching CU become a good volleyball program.

I have been told on more than one occasion that there is frustration at the higher levels of more than one school's athletic departments at Commioner Val's focus on women's basketball at the expense of soccer and volleyball.

Maybe that is somewhat understandable since women's basketball typically draws more fans even though I would argue that women's volleyball is a better product. Big Ten volleyball is pretty amazing in that many teams have full venues even on a week night. Husker volleyball games are always sold out at an 8,000 - seat arena and getting tickets for volleyball games is MUCH more difficult than getting tickets for football games. :)

By the way, I'm looking forward to Sunday's match between Creighton and Marquette.

I will first admit that I have never been a fan of women's college basketball. That said, I'm not sure our programs are designed to be national powers anyway. However, I do believe that the Big Easy could be among the top 2 or 3 volleyball and soccer leagues regularly if we pushed those sports. As stated earlier, I know there are people dissatisfied with how Val has handled women's sports other than basketball.
