With Big East undefeated, UConn's Hurley says 'mistake was made'
"Obviously the mistake was made," Hurley said after the defending national champs won their eighth straight tournament game by double digits. "It sucks."

The NCAA tournament selection committee left out the next tier of Big East teams -- Seton Hall, St. John's and Providence. All three reached the 20-win plateau.

Instead, the committee selected two teams from the Mountain West and one each from the ACC and Big 12. The Mountain West sent six teams total.

Hurley and the rest of the Big East coaches, who have their own group chat, seem to have noticed. The Mountain West is 3-5 so far in the tournament. The Big 12 is 3-3.

Meanwhile, the Big East is the first conference to send at least three teams to the NCAA tournament and have none lose a game prior to the Sweet 16 since the SEC in 2014. Prior to that, it hadn't happened since the Big East in 2003.

"Just the quality of the league; look what we've done in nonconference games," Hurley said in defense of the Big East on Sunday. "I don't know what our record is the last two years, nonconference [multi-team events], NCAA tournament, and Seton Hall beat us by 15. You know, we've won eight straight in this tournament, all by significant margins, and they were good enough to beat us and they were good enough to beat Marquette.

"And there should have been five or six Big East teams in this tournament. You've seen how other leagues that got the bids that our league deserved has underperformed."

Appreciate Dan Hurley and UConn. They are Big East through and through. We can't change that fact that we were (unfairly) given an inappropriate number of bids given the league's advanced metrics. We can argue schedules, we can discuss bid thieves, we can discuss resumes, but it is what it is at this point. I do hope for two things 1) UConn/MU/CU continue winning, earning credits for the league, and teaching the current and future committees a lesson about the treatment/viewpoint of the Big East, but also 2) I hope Val, the ADs and HCs genuinely sit down and and look where we can improve strategically to maximize not just our annual bids per year, but also the seeds we earn as well. If the trade-off, from given data, is that the highest probability of earning three top-3 seeds for the league lowers the changes of 5 or 6 bids (because of the R/R schedule and resulting W/Ls), then we need to really look at the current and future value of the R/R. We should seek to get high seeds and 6/7 bids per year, maximizing the opportunity to get multiple teams deep into March. If that discussion ultimately leads to expansion, then we need to do that (despite the Syracuse/Duke or bust mindsets that a few of us have).

I also think with the elimination of the Gavitt Games, that creates opportunity for value for each of our teams. I believe the Big 12 either directly or indirectly discovered that the NET can be manipulated with scheduling, and even scheduling mid-majors at home, but blowing them out, adds (albeit unfairly) to a league's advanced metrics (especially for its middle). At the end of the day, we need to win OOC in order to maximize conference play. We will never go undefeated OOC, but every time a team enters conference with 5, 6 or more losses, it really impairs the league's ability to have top-to-bottom opportunities to strengthen resumes. This year, with Georgetown and DePaul being two of those teams, it really limited things (as did Hall only going 7-4 OOC but winning 13 games in conference). In hindsight, St. John's getting blown out to Michigan was huge loss as well, but with such a new team for only its second game, that played into it for sure.

Next year could very well be the deepest coaching talent pool in this version of the Big East. The league needs to continue recruiting and attracting talent, and being strategic with scheduling. The NCAAT bids and success will no doubt follow.

To anyone that follows bracketology all season, it's painfully obvious that BE teams generally don't game the system like MWC, B12, and WCC. We probably got what we deserved and shouldn't act surprised. I'd only consider St. John's a snub, and objectively with their resume it could've gone either way. Val's right screaming at top of our lungs won't accomplish anything. Schedule smarter. Don't treat OOC like it's practice for the conference season. It's a cutthroat business, so don't cry about it after you got out-gamed.

It’s so annoying how the media is touting how great the ACC is for putting 4 teams in the Sweet 16 while pretty much ignoring the fact that the Big East is undefeated.

One thing I watch for every year is if any conference has a chance to match the 1985 Final Four when the Big East had 3 of the 4 participants. Luckily, the 4 ACC teams are lumped into only 2 regions so they have no shot…..No other conference has more than 2 teams left, except for us….

Let’s have a Big East three-peat in Phoenix!

To be fair, the ACC's been getting jobbed for a few years. Next year I really hope they find a way to disrupt B12 and MWC's strategy of blowing out cupcakes at home + trade wins in conference.

And the MWC flames out in spectacular fashion. Really a shame that they got 6 bids in the tourney.

There isn’t an extra unit for making the title game right? So 11 is the final number of units for the league, which isn’t bad when divided among 11 schools.

Yeah, units are earned per appearance except the championship game. Top 7 conferences all earned just about 1 unit per team, but the BE had to really outperform to get there with only 3 teams.
