Seton Hall Covid issues

Postby redmen9194 » Thu Dec 16, 2021 12:13 pm

It's being reported that Seton Hall / Iona is off Saturday due to Covid issues on the Seton Hall side. Puts the Hall / SJU game in jeopardy for Monday night. New Big East Covid rule is if a team can't play it's a forfeit which would suck.

DePaul game would also be in question on Thursday.

Talk already that SHU may have to forfeit the SJU and DePaul games, which effectively takes them out of contention for the regular season title. Only saving grace is that the losses don't count on the overall record and will have 0 impact on SHU's tournament resume.

That sucks, but honestly they didn't have much to gain for the league by playing Iona at this point. Seton Hall already has had an excellent OOC and if Iona beat them it would've propelled Iona back into the national spotlight and hurt Hall. It's mostly bottom-tier teams like Georgetown, Butler and St. John's who have the most room for improvement by completing their OOC schedules.

That said, I was looking forward to the St. John's game. :(

Agreed that scratching Iona and taking the 9-1 OOC record is no big deal. Hopefully there's a way they can be ready the SJU game, even shorthanded, but I'm not optimistic.

I was really hoping - perhaps foolishly - that there would be no more of these in the Big East.

Yeah isn't that the truth. This week has been a pretty harsh reminder not just in college BB but NBA/NHL/NFL as well.

To clarify, if all three games are cancelled, Seton Hall would go from 9-1 (0-0) to 9-1 (0-2)? If so, that is a great change from last year.

That's my understanding, yes. Unfortunately, it also would rob SJU and DePaul of quad 1 opportunities as they'd get the win in the conference standings but won't be able to claim it on their overall records and NCAA tournament resumes.

I think the records would be 9-3 overall because a forfeit is still a loss. However, it's not going to mean anything to the NCAA committee as they are no play games.
