Turgeon Out At Maryland...

Postby billyjack » Fri Dec 03, 2021 3:34 pm

This was written over at Scout Friars, but the guy who wrote it wants it to be posted here at the HLOH...

Mark Turgeon out as Maryland men’s basketball coach after 10 seasons - Baltimore Sun
https://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/ter ... story.html

Turgeon acts like a 5 year old on the sideline. Whiny cheerleading douche.

His coaching career is interesting, falling into great positions, and his NCAA wins and success... well, some good, and some underwhelming...

Jacksonville State
(the one in Alabama):
99:
00:

Wichita State:
01:
02:
03:
04:
05:
06: (7-seed) Sweet 16:
07:

Texas A&M:
replaced Billy Gillespie, who left for Kentucky and had aTm in excellent shape...
08: (9-seed) Round of 32.
09: (9-seed) Round of 32.
10: (5-seed) Round of 32.
11: (7-seed) Round of 64.

Maryland:
replaced Gary Williams, who retired leaving an excellent program and a National Championship in 2002...
12:
13:
14:
15: (4-seed) Round of 32.
16: (5-seed) Sweet 16.
17: (6-seed) Round of 32.
18:
19: (6-seed) Round of 32.
20: covid.
21: (10-seed) Round of 32.
22: canned after 8 games.
.
NCAA results:
.
Wichita 2006:
W vs Seton Hall of Louie Orr by 20.
W vs Tennessee of Bruce Pearl by 7.
L vs George Mason of Larranaga by 8.
.
aTm 2008:
W vs BYU by 5.
L vs UCLA by 2.
.
aTm 2009:
W vs BYU by 13.
L vs UConn by 26.
.
aTm 2010:
W vs Utah State by 16.
L vs Purdue by 2 in OT.
.
aTm 2011:
L vs Florida State by 7.
.
Maryland 2015:
W vs Valparaiso by 3.
L vs West Virginia by 10.
.
Maryland 2016:
W vs South Dakota State by 3.
W vs Hawaii by 13.
L vs Kansas by 16.
.
Maryland 2017:
L vs Xavier by 11.
.
Maryland 2019:
W vs Belmont by 2.
L vs LSU by 2.
.
Maryland 2021:
W vs UConn by 9.
L vs Alabama by 19.
.
So, good fetting NCAA bids.
Problems getting high seeds.
.
In the NCAA's, in only 2 years has he beaten a team from a power conference... 2006 beating Seton Hall and Tennessee... 2021 beating UConn...
.
Most of his NCAA wins are against midmajors:
BYU, BYU again, Utah State, Valpo, South Dakota State, Hawaii, Belmont
.
NCAA's with Texas A&M and Maryland (so 2008 to present), he was 1-9 vs major conferences. And vs major conferences recently he tends to get his -ss kicked.
.
P.S. 50 bucks* to anyone who knows in what conference Jacksonville State was living in 1999.

* i will not honor this deal... may be paid by Stever20 or Gtmo.

Was Jax St even D1 in 1999-00?

So I looked and they were. And was kind of the conference I was thinking..

thought his Wiki page thing about his end at Wichita was something-
Turgeon and the Shockers started the 2006-2007 season 9-0, winning on the road at George Mason,[9] LSU,[10] and Syracuse.[11] The Shockers were ranked as high as #8 on the AP Poll before entering a slump, ending the season 17-14 and without a postseason.

It would take Gregg Marshall 2 years to get the back.

And Kevin Willard is already popping up all over the place as the media favorite to get the job. Not an ideal distraction to have hanging over the team all season.
