Wasn't the field only 48 team this year?

48 is normal for soccer, it was reduced to 36 this year. The reduced field saved Marquette a game, but as seeded teams Georgetown and Seton Hall would have had byes through the inital round anyway.

Humm. Is the women's field 64? I know in a normal year in baseball, softball and volleyball which are more sports I follow, have 64 teams in the field.

It looks like that's correct, the women's tournament was reduced to 48 from a usual 64.

Hoyas and Pirates to the Elite 8!
Marquette lead #3 overall seed Indiana for a while but dropped a tight one late.
Seton Hall faces those same Hoosier's next
Georgetown now has a seemingly clear path the College Cup, facing a Marshall team that just upset #1 overall seed, Clemson.
