Greg McDermott Suspension, Etc...

Postby billyjack » Thu Mar 04, 2021 11:13 pm

I figure this deserves its own specific thread.

Quick summary of Creighton U's statement at around 10pm tonight:

"The statement from CU says he’s suspended, that further sanctions remain under consideration but won’t all be made public, and that Coach should use the experience as an opportunity for needed growth and learning..."

McDermott won't coach vs Butler this weekend, and things are still uncertain whether he'll return for the Big East tourney next week.

Some comments about this were posted in the Coaching Carousel thread. I've got to read up on everything in more detail.

McDermott offered to resign, but it wasn't accepted by CU. Seems like Creighton had to take some sort of action while they review everything.

From 1500 miles away here back east, i would guess that after sitting out Saturday, maybe there will be more in-depth discussions over the weekend, and he may be re-instated by next Thursday? Seven days is an eternity this time of year in college hoops, and a lot of things can go down. Maybe the players can speak with a unified voice one way or another? Or maybe other coaches?

With his screwed-up locker room comments, was he meaning to say "reservation"? I've never hear the "plantation" phrasing anywhere-- is that a Midwestern phrase or something? It seems very out of character from everything i've seen and read about him since the Jays have been in the Big East.

It's not a Midwestern phrase and no one knows where he came up with that. I have never heard that phrase before in my life, but it's a really bad one! We don't know what is going to happen moving forward!

If you wondered how Salem was in the late 1600's, this is it. It's the never-ending game of who can out-woke each other. Watch his family lose their jobs too. What a sick country we live in today. Zero chance to redeem yourself. One strike, you're out. Actions be damned. Shame on all of you who take part in cancel culture and perpetuate it without fighting back. You can agree that what he said was really stupid and also agree that a good man's life does not need to be ruined for a mistake. I hope those calling for his head are perfect.

Dude, chill on the Salem stuff and cancel stuff.

Creighton needed to take action, and they'll review things in the coming days. My uneducated guess is that since CU didn't accept his resignation, that McDermott will return.

But G McD's comments were idiotic. So being suspended for the Butler game is appropriate. From what we know right now, hopefully he survives, and this becomes a teachable moment.

We are officially in a painfully divided country. NOTHING good can come out of this constant blood lust from the "cancel culture" mob. What if Coach Cooley or Jordan had made the same locker room mistake trying to motivate his guys? I guarantee the blow back would be minimal. Ok, McDermott is a white guy....and that is the ONLY reason why this is making news.

God help us, because this is sh!t is going to continue to snowball....and the damage to ALL of us will be devastating.

Thread would be best if we stayed on the topic of McDermott specifically, and didn't veer off into hyper-ventiating about the Salem Witch Trials, etc.

Apologize if it came off a bit much, but just sick of this being the new default in America. It's not who we are. Anyway, back to McDermott specifically. If Creighton does end up firing him or he resigns still, Creighton deserves it. They may not be nearly as competitive in the Big East without him. It's just odd to me, because first they make it seem like the players supported him, then he offers to resign, they say no, now they suspend him. Very odd optics. Just make a decision and stop trying to appease.

NO, if this thread goes anywhere that makes sense, it would be NOT be on what McDermott said but the suicidal path this country is on concerning CANCEL CULTURE.....it's nothing more than national self mutilation.
