XU Pres: $2.5M per year for TV

Postby xman » Wed Mar 20, 2013 3:16 pm

Interesting tidbit:

The new league, which will keep the Big East name and play its men’s basketball tournament in Madison Square Garden, will be a financial boon for Xavier.

A new television deal with Fox Sports will bring XU’s annual take to nearly $2.5 million, compared to about $400,000 annually now from the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Graham said all conference members, including new invitees Xavier, Butler and Creighton, will share the television revenue equally.

It will start playing in the league this coming fall in all 18 sports.

But Graham said the impact will spread far beyond the athletic department budget. For example, high-school seniors who have been accepted at Xavier but have not committed for next fall will get an e-mail in the next few days touting the new conference.

“I would be hard-pressed to name a single decision by the university that is more sweeping in its impact,” Graham said. “I can’t help but think that the Xavier brand will have a glow to it because of this.”

The 2.5M number can't be right. The only thing that would make sense is if we agreed to less for the first year and Fox paying our exit fee.

Worried it means the contract is a lot smaller than reported? The only important numbers are years, total contact value, and number of teams. The contract could be escalating, each season represents a small boost for each school, so the first year would be the smallest payout and the last year the largest. There have also been rumors that all costs for conference transition and conference operations will come out of the media pool prior to dividing to schools, so that could lower payments early on. You can't take a single yearly payment number and figure out what the overall value of a deal is.

Or the TV contract is backloaded...

2.50 - 2013
2.75 - 2014
3.00 - 2015
3.25 - 2016
3.50 - 2017
3.75 - 2018
4.00 - 2019
4.25 - 2020
4.50 - 2021
4.75 - 2022
5.00 - 2023

Also the Conference itself normally gets a share to pay for all their expenses, and maybe FOX is stil paying a little less until schools 11 and 12 come on board

There is a chance you may never get the answer. Everyone was always asking about how adding a public school would effect the league and why it mattered, well this is one of the reasons. There is no FoIA in an all private league and they are not legally bound to tell us the details of the TV deal if they choose not to.

If VCU was one of the 3 schools added, we'd have all the numbers already. We'll have to watch and see how much information they decide to release.

Yup, we're missing so many details that worrying over specific detail numbers just isn't worth it.

edit: The fan calculations on how much a contract is worth per year per team are nice, but they don't tell you what realized payouts will be. It's just a nice quick way to compare contracts and get a sense of their values.

The bottom line: National reports say the “Catholic 7” schools could collect up to $5 million a year.

New members such as Xavier could collect only about half of that amount, but that still is much more than the estimated $400,000 a year they receive in the Atlantic 10, ESPN reported.

This is why the C7 aren't adding 5 schools at once. They're leveraging their position to hoard the FOX money.

Look at the first post, all ten are sharing media revenue equally. I trust that "source" before likely rehash of very old reports that could have been speculation.

I wouldn't worry about the $2.5 million reported, especially since we haven't seen it anywhere else. It is after all, the Cincinnati media. I was watching the local news on TV and they thought it more appropriate to report on a theft near the campus of Xavier than Xavier entering the Big East. The University of Cincinnati biased media is completely beside themselves. The only theft that should have been reported at Xavier today was taking UC's place in the Big East.

Please Creighton, if you care at all about your new Big East brothers, end UC's season!

I have to imagine the $2.5 million is about amortizing the exit fee, then all schools go to an equal distribution status.
