I was just reading this article about the contract Ed Cooley just received (due to Michigan's flirtations), and Providence really gave that man the ocean. 30/40 million for 10 years (which starts this year)
I believe 10 years left on his deal puts him just behind Cal, in terms of job security in college basketball.
Is there any language in the deal as far as a buyout? I doesn't sound like it.
https://www.golocalprov.com/sports/ed-c ... nds-sportsThe stakes were high for Providence College. Ed Cooley is the public face of the college and it was critical that the college keep him when Big Ten powerhouse University of Michigan came knocking to hire him to be their new basketball coach.
It is big business. Michigan’s athletic program generates the fourth most revenue of any college programs in America — $185,173,187 annually.
Now, Cooley after a second contract extension in three years, is slated to earn between an estimated $30 and $40 million over the course of his new contract with Providence College -- estimated to be 10 years.

Lol, Sam Elliott the AAC fan.
Losing Cooley in June would've been a disaster for the Friars program, and would've made the conference look like sh-t.
And any major coaching decision or serious assessment made about a guy due to a bad 2-week stretch in November, in his 9th year as coach, and who's had great success, would be nuts. Especially a coach who has rebuilt the program from the scrap heap, has made 7 postseasons, won a Big East tournament, and who runs a clean program with fantastic kids. Over the years, he's lost out on top level talent due to whorehouses in Louisville, and Kentucky and Kansas and NC State and others paying players, etc. Throw in the huge factor that he's coaching in his hometown, and has lived through the ups and downs of Friars history, and he should be given a lot of leash.

I was wondering last night and this thread makes me ask the PC fans how much anxiety there is with the addition of UConn.

I have no problem at all with UConn. I think it's a clear net positive because it gets New England talking Big East hoops.

Losing Cooley to Michigan would not have made the conference look like ****. VT lost Buzz and nobody said the ACC looked like ****. Oh, and look at VT now with their excellent start. Michigan got poached and other big teams like Cincy also got poached. Big East didn't get poached by anyone and would've been fine if Cooley left.
I agree Cooley should be given benefit of the doubt here. It's a major outlier year for them. It sucks but it happens.

Given that last year Providence had their worst year in 5 years, is this a major outlier year?

Yes. Last year they still made the NIT.

Still have a long ways to go this year. Cooley always seems to do well in conference play.

Great success?? Ehhh he snuck in the tournament as a bubble team by the skin of his teeth 4 of the 5 appearances and got bounced immediately every year other than one last second win over usc. He’s never finished above third in conference. Cooley has been fine but providence fans acting like he’s a “great success” is how they ended up way overpaying him and locking into a huge extension.
He should be given a leash for this season though.
