Big East Tourney Prediction - Marq/Nova vs the field

Postby Omaha1 » Sat Feb 16, 2019 9:24 pm

This year seems to me like a year when almost anyone could string together 3-4 days of good ball and win the auto ncaa bid. I will give you Marquette + Villanova and take the field of 8 others. Who you got?
Nebraska by birth, Creighton by choice.

Of course I want to see St. John's win it, and am hoping tomorrow's MSG game is a preview of what's to come, but outside of that I think the best match up would be either Villanova/Marquette vs a team not competing for a bid (which will be at least half the league).

Since nobody is getting a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament this year, I am just rooting for upsets against the top two teams. Imagine a ranked Nova vs seemingly NIT bound Georgetown competing in the finals... and then Georgetown winning.

In terms of who I expect to win, I'll take the field this year. Nova isn't as good as they usually are, and I don't trust Marquette to win based on mediocre showings in previous years.

Something pretty incredible, is from 2001-2013 only one current Big East team played in the BET finals- Georgetown. They won it in 2007. Other teams who won it during that time includes Syracuse/BC/Pitt/Louisville (ACC), WVU (Big 12) and UConn (AAC). Despite that, we not only recently renewed a long term lease with MSG (despite efforts from the ACC/B1G to steal it) but also sell it out consistently.

Needless to say, Villanova almost single handedly saved the Tournament from losing it's luster. Since the reformat 5 years ago, we've had 5 different teams compete in the finals and 3 winners. This year I think there's a really good chance the other half (Marquette, St. John's, Butler, Georgetown, DePaul) can make it to the finals.

I don't like to use teamrankings, but it's the only odds I've found online.

https://www.teamrankings.com/ncb/confer ... t-bracket/

Nova (36%) + Marq (24.5%) > 60%

I still look back on the Seton Hall vs Nova final as the shining moment of the new big east, other than Nova actually winning the titles of course.

That was an instant classic and the atmosphere was electric. I already loved the new look big east but that was the moment for me where I said to myself “this conference isn’t going anywhere”. Because that game was played in a time where all the MSG stuff was up in the air with other conferences moving into NY.

Tough for me to pick against St. John's at the Garden.

From Wednesday to Champions....

Creighton wins 4 in 4 days to claim the 2019 BET.

I’ll take the field. They may be far and away the top 2 seeds, but there’s a team in the conference 3-1 against them so i think they can and will be taken down

The problem for St John's is they'll have that 3/6 or 4/5 game to deal with against a team they've lost to already almost for sure.

So? Obviously St. John’s will have to win a game before seeing Marq/Nova. We will probably be playing a team we lost to, but we will probably also be playing a team we beat. It’s not easy winning the big east tournament. But I’ll still take our guys on our home floor this year. I believe in them cause I’m actually a fan, not just some guy trying to bring up “problems” with every team in the league for the sake of being a devils advocate.
