Big East committee recommendations to NCAA

Very interesting recommendations made by a Big East committee on ways to improve NCAA basketball. The headline is doing away with the one and done, but lots of other good ideas in my opinion.

Have the scholarship agreement read that if the player declares for the NBA prior to end of sophomore year, he agrees to repay the scholarship, including the living allowance, books, fees, etc. Note, he can transfer to another school, but can't go to the NBA.

that's not going to stop projected 1st rd picks from leaving. and let's say the kid goes and has successful nba career. is the school really going to ruin ties with one of their most prominent nba alum by asking him for his scholarship money?

Yeah, I don't like that idea - no way Butler would want to risk breaking ties with Gordon Hayward.

What does the player's union say about this? Oh wait, there is none and as such they have will have zero voice in these decisions. Proceed to discuss the one-sided debate.

Coaches should be required to give 90% of their salary to their players.

Most of these recommendations are pretty progressive, but there will definitely be pushback from the money players - AAU coaches, shoe companies and others. The Big East is right that the schools and NCAA should take ownership of more of the developmental aspects of amateur basketball, but who else will support this?

Coaches should required to be full-time professors with a professors salary and accept no extra benefits beyond this.

I'd rather see them go with the hockey model - allow players to be drafted and still be eligible to return to school to play until they sign a professional contract. Upon being drafted, the pro team and player can decide to sign a contract to play in the NBA or G-League, in which case college eligibility is lost, or he can return to college with the team that drafted him retaining his rights for when he does choose to turn pro. The biggest down-side here is that some coaches will be left scrambling to fill roster spots late - but these guys are paid millions, let them figure it out. The only other potential problem I can see is if an NBA team tries to sign/call-up a college player mid-season, but it can't be too difficult to make a rule preventing that, right?

Why make it so complicated? Here should be the rules.

1. Be a full-time student.
2. Under the age of 25.

That's it.
