And the ACC has 4 teams left, Big 12 has 4 teams left, SEC still has 2 teams left, Big Ten champion(which is Michigan) is still alive and the highest seed for the region.

Also, if this was a one off situation where a top big east seed flamed out, it would be one thing. But it's happened all 5 years.

I feel like I had the same conversation with Stever on the other board. Beating a dead horse I'm afraid.

Big East is 5-12 in 2nd round games.

If the Big East was 12-5 in those 2nd round games, don't you think the perception of the conference would be different? I mean, folks here complain all the time about how little respect the conference gets in the AP polls thru the season. March is 100% the reason for that.

Like this year- if the Big East went 3-1 in those 4 2nd round games, what would the country be saying right now? Great season- one of the best conferences. But this is what someone from NBC Sports posted:
The 2018 NCAA tournament has been brutal for the six-bid Big East. The Wildcats have shot the ball at an extremely high level for two games. The rest of the conference was a disaster. Xavier, the league’s second No. 1 seed, was upset by No. 9 seed Florida State. No. 8 seed Seton Hall and No. 10 seed Butler were both bounced in the second round as well by No. 1 seed Kansas and No. 2 seed Purdue, respectively. Creighton and Providence couldn’t even make it out of the first round after losses to No. 9 seed Kansas State and No. 7 seed Texas A&M. This was a year to forget for the Big East.

And yes, like billyjack said, most of why the press has changed towards the Big East is the Nova title in '16. That is by far and not even remotely close the biggest thing that's happened with the Big East in all 5 years. If that doesn't happen, the press wouldn't be anywhere near as favorable to the Big East right now. So that change is a direct result of March/April.

In 2011, the Big East got an incredible 11 teams into the tournament. What was the buzz?

The Big East is awesome!

Nine of those 11 teams failed to get out of the first weekend. What was the buzz?

The Big East is dead!

UConn, 9th in the Big East, went on to win the national championship. What was the buzz?

The Big East does it again!

The point is that the buzz after the first weekend doesn’t matter and it doesn’t last. All the average fan remembers about 2011 is that UConn brought home another national title for the Big East.

Ultimately perception doesn’t matter. This is college sports. So fans are very attached to their own schools through thick and thin, regardless of perception. What matters is the size of your audience because it pays the bills. And what matters are the numbers your Conference puts up because that’s what gets your team into the tournament, not perception. And then after that the tournament matters but the 3 week ride in March is no more fun than the previous 4 month ride that it took to get there.

Right. So all that needs to happen is for Nova to win it all again. Got it.

The 3 week ride in March may be no more fun than the previous 4 month ride that it took to get there, but to casual fans and even voters- the 3 week ride in March means way more.

Also, perception matters for getting into the better exempt tournaments and even better OOC games.

Those leagues also got more teams in the tournament. The big 12 has been impressive, but no one else has bathed itself in glory.

But that doesn't explain how the Big East hasn't stepped up in all but 1 tournament. Take Pac 12 for instance. Sure they were 0 fer this year. But last year they had 3 sweet 16's and a final 4 team. ACC had a bad tournament last year, but still won the title with UNC, so that makes up for it. SEC had 3 elite 8's last year. It's a cumulative thing.

Stever, you obviously believe your own bull. So lets take the hypothetical and agree with your points. The Big East is bad. What do you do to fix it?

My guess:
S20: "Rip up Fox contract. Sign with ESPN-U. Add VCU. Move the BE tourney to Scranton so that the mighty ACC can use MSG. Write letter of apology to the ACC for not moving out if MSG earlier. Bend over whenever the ACC asks."

I'd encourage Fox to do the sub license with ESPN after next year for 1. Getting back on ESPN I think would really help the recruiting.
Add 2 teams- probably Dayton and SLU. Go 12 teams 18 games. Gives the league a much better chance at having 3-4 teams getting in the tourney with top 4-5 seeds, which will allow the league to have much better chances at advancing in the tourney.
Make the referees call the games in the regular season like they are reffed in the postseason. I think last weekend this really hurt some Big East teams. I know that would piss some folks off wanting the refs to let the guys play- but the refs aren't preparing the teams for what they're going to see in March.
Encourage all teams to schedule much stronger OOC.
