Louisville coaching situation far from settled, but Xavier’s early tourney exit could help - Dave Holcomb, Louisville Diehards – March 19, 2018
Louisville reportedly would like nothing more than to end the 2017-18 season on a high note and hire Xavier coach Chris Mack.

The five Musketeers coaches prior to Mack — Sean Miller, Thad Matta, Skip Prosser, Pete Gillen, and Bob Staak — all experienced great success at Xavier before moving on to a Power 5 program. No one would be surprised if Mack is next. However, Mack is different than those five coaches in that he is from Cincinnati and played at Xavier. He very well might not want to leave home.

Plus, Xavier no longer is in a “secondary” conference. The Big East isn’t what it used to be, but it’s still more highly regarded than the Atlantic 10 or the old Midwestern Collegiate Conference.

There are analysts who would argue that the Big East has featured some of the best basketball in the nation over the last couple years. Villanova joined Xavier as a No. 1 seed in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, and four other Big East schools joined them in the field of 68.

If Louisville is going to land Mack, the Cardinals might not only have to outbid Pitt and UConn, they may need to make it worth his while because he would be leaving his hometown and alma mater.

So while Xavier’s early loss in the NCAA Tournament could be a good thing on the surface, there are a lot of moving parts. For all we know, the early exit could inspire Mack to stay at Xavier to complete unfinished business.

I really hope Chris Mack stays at Xavier. Screw Louisville, their billions of basketball dollars, and their planeloads of hookers.

Mississippi State routs Louisville basketball to end Cards' season in NIT quarterfinals - Louisville Courier Journal - March 21, 2018
David Padgett's final game?

The 33-year-old Nevadan acknowledged after Selection Sunday that he knows full well how the college coaching business works. The former Louisville player seemed to understand his days at the helm were numbered. This season was his first as a head coach, and his debut came in trying circumstances. Thrust into the role two days before formal preseason practices began, Padgett earned high marks from many around the college hoops community for how he handled the situation with poise. The actual season didn't pan out the way many hoped, but Padgett acquitted himself well enough to be in position to get a head coaching job elsewhere.

Louisville lost last night. Things are about to get real. Losing arguably the best coach in our history, who also happens to be a former player and Cincinnati local, would hurt a lot. Hopefully he stays, but things aren't sounding good. Louisville fans and insiders are very confident that Mack will be announced as their head coach this off-season.

An interesting player in all of this: Sean Miller. It's been reported that he's encouraged Mack to stay at Xavier. We all knew that Miller really struggled with his decision when he left Xavier, and people have said for a while that he would have stayed had Xavier been in the same position then that it is now. Here's hoping that Mack learns from Miller's mistake.

I agree with Miller. Stay at Xavier where you’re beloved, and become a legend. Or go to Louisville where you’ll inevitably become sucked into the abyss as Miller has. How much money do you really need?

Saw Hurley did in fact leave for UConn.

If nothing else, this totally shows where the A10 is in relation now to the AAC. To have your best coach leave for the AAC is devastating.

The AAC if UConn and Memphis get back to their normal becomes a whole lot more difficult to ignore. Already had 3 top 6 seed year this year.

UConn gets Hurley for 6 years. Slam dunk hire. Combine that with Memphis getting Hardaway and his pipeline of talent and the AAC's trajectory seems to be trending upwards.

Hurley was a slam dunk. Penny's coaching career entails two years as a high school assistant coach and one year as a high school head coach. For Memphis to hire someone with so little experience, even one of their most famous former players, seems a tad desperate. But he will fill up the arena year 1.
