This article is a couple of months old but I just stumbled on it today. I thought it was interesting how much each conference will make on average per school (although I know we don't distribute evenly) from March Madness this past year.

1. Big 12-$2.57 million/school (25,676,760/10)
2. Big E-$2.2 million/school (2,225,319/10)
3. SEC-$1.96 million/school ($27,388,544/14)
4. ACC-$1.9 million/school ($30,812,112/16)
5. B1G-$1.8 million/school ($25,676,760/14)
6. PAC-$1.7 million/school ($23,964,976/14)

I also thought that the huge dropoff from the top 6 to the rest was interesting as the next highest totals are the WCC at just under $12 million, then the A10 just under $7 million, and the AAC with just over $5 million.

**Note: That's $22,253,192.00 - just sayin'.

the money is payable over the next 6 years. The tourney unit system rewards consistency. So while the Big East has this year, it also has 2014 for another 3 years with only 6 units for the entire tourney.

Oh, and the ACC has only 15 teams. P12 has only 12.

BE needs to have 3 more years where they are like this year.

So the Big East made the 2nd most per school out of any conference - and it wasn't even close? Plus Big East made $22.2M compared to $5.1M for the American.... that's gotta send Stever into night sweats.

Here's a question.... Obviously this is great news for the Big East. 2nd most money per school of any conference. How does a Georgetown fan react - minimizing it by saying well, the thing is you gotta look what happened in 2014!!! So say by some miracle the American gets more than 2 teams in the NCAA tourney in 2020 and a couple of them make a run. Can anyone see Georgetown Stever coming on this Big East board and say welllll the thing you gotta remember is the units are paid out over 6 years - remember the AAC in 2017!!

Well, the thing that people are forgetting is that Villanova won last year's championship at the buzzer, and it very well could have rolled out, and UNC probably should have won in overtime. If we take that into account, then we should remove Nova's championship from consideration and rightfully place it elsewhere. Also, we know full well that Temple could have easily beaten Iowa in last year's tournament in overtime, if not for some questionable calls and made shots by the Hawkeyes, so we should correctly give the AAC more credit than they are due for their tournament performance.

That said, The fact that the BE made the 2nd most per team this year was still very much accurate as was the separation between the top 6 conferences and everyone else. I guess my question to stever is, in a post making no real point other than the overall positive direction of the league why play the Debbie downer role? What's the motivation?

The thing is, it does look a lot more impressive than it really is. The difference between the Big East and Big Ten is 390k per school. Divide that by the 6 years that it's payable and it's 65k per school per year over the next 6 years.

The way the units work- it values consistency. I mean next year(which is for tourneys in 2012-17)- here's the avg units per school per conference. Each unit is worth about 270k now...
1- Big 12 7.90- or about 2.158 million per school
2- Big Ten 7.21- or about 1.970 million per school
3- ACC 6.60- or about 1.803 million per school
4- Pac 12 5.33-or about 1.457 million per school
5- Big East 5.30- or about 1.448 million per school
6- SEC 4.71- or about 1.287 million per school

The NCAA set it up where 1 tourney year doesn't mean you get a ton that year. Much more certainty from a year to year basis. People see the articles initially referenced to in the thread and think the Big East will get that money like now. Pretty common misnomer with that.

Also- the point about the separation between top 6 and everyone else. Looking at the per school numbers- the gap is
6 SEC 1.287 per school.
7 AAC 1.266 per school
8 A10 839k per school
9 WCC 737k per school
10 MVC 655k per school
11 MWC 546k per school

so 450k difference between SEC and A10 per school.

Again, to Marquette's point - what is the motivation of an alleged Georgetown fan to come to this board talking about the very positive direction of the conference, earning the second most money from the NCAA tournament per school and you come on here talking about this? Your act is old.

And the above post makes no sense. What conference even looks remotely similar in 2017 as to what it did in 2012 or 2013 or 2014?

I almostwant to ask how you even calculated the numbers above - but the bottom line is going to be whatever calculation puts the Big East in the worst light and the AAC in the best light - and throw in a little bit of common sense-defying logic to get there. But the current configuration of the Big East wasn't even a legal entity in 2012 or 2013. So according to what you have, the Big East gets $1.448M per school. That's only for 4 years. That's pretty damn impressive. The American (which is the legal successor to the Big East and gets the Big East's credits from 2012 and 2013) is only getting $1.266M per school for 6 years and 2 of those years are credits from a different (and much more successful) conference. That should be cause of major concern for you "Georgetown" Stever and the officials at the American offices.
