So, during the season I was looking for positive tendencies in the Dave Leitao Version 2.0 at DePaul, and I started compiling the list of results shown below. DePaul under Leitao has struggled, though they're way better than they were under Purnell, with Leitao getting occasional nice wins (vs George Washington, Providence twice, and a couple of others).
In looking at struggling, weak programs, which are considered to have absolutely no chance of breaking out of their misery, I always think back to the 1980’s with Seton Hall, which set the Gold Standard in the Big East for an unlikely meteoric rise. From 1960 forward, the Pirates were either average, mediocre or awful. After Raftery for 10+ years, plus a year of his assistant Hoddy Mahon, Seton Hall hired local whiz kid PJ Carlesimo. PJ was coming off a horrid 4-22 season at Wagner.
After 2 particularly terrible seasons, and a couple of only slightly awful years, with little in the way of competitiveness in Big East play, and Pirates fans calling for Carlesimo’s head... somehow, things turned around in around 1987 with an NIT bid. In 88 the Hall qualified for the NCAA’s and picked up a first-round win. In 89 they were of course fantastic, with a blowout win vs Indiana in the Sweet Sixteen, followed by 2 crushings of UNLV and Duke, making the Rebels and Duke look like kindergarteners. It wasn’t just that they won, but it was the manner of victory. They had a 10 point lead on Michigan in the mid second half, but basically Glen Rice was unconscious and was the reason Michigan won the title (along with a ridiculous whistle).
Anyway, here are the early Carlesimo years at Seton Hall, followed by Leitao’s results at DePaul in 2016 and 2017. Just looking for a silver lining or parallels that could give us hope that DePaul can break loose. Just putting the numbers down for us to look at. DePaul to me is in better shape in 2017 than Seton Hall was in 1984.
Anyway:
1981 SETON HALL:
Bill Raftery.
11-16, 4-10.
1982 SETON HALL:
Hoddy Mahon.
11-16, 2-12.
P.J. Carlesimo hired from Wagner on Staten Island.
In 6 years at Wagner, they went:
1977: 3-21.
1978: 7-19.
1979: 21-7.
1980: 14-13.
1981: 16-11.
1982: 4-22.
So Carlesimo was coming off a 4-22 year at Wagner when Seton Hall hired him.

Dave Leitao last coached in 2009, going 10-18 at Virginia.
4 years at Virginia, won 15, 21, 17 and 10 games
Prior to that, at DePaul, he went 16-13, 22-10 and 20-11.
Way back, in 95 and 96, he went 18-11 and 4-24.
I’d like to think Leitao is already at the 1986 Seton Hall stage.
