Co-Brand with Ivy League?

Postby butlerguy03 » Sat Mar 11, 2017 11:42 am

Just throwing this idea out there after thinking about the Ivy League and its history. Would it be feasible to work with the Ivy League to allow them to play the conference tournament at MSG at the same time?

1. Today's championships could be a double header
2. Big East schools would benefit academically by being in the same sentence as the Ivy schools.
3. Ivy League schools would benefit athletically by being associated with MSG and Big East basketball.

I see no real issues other than a potential loss of revenue and maybe scheduling conflicts if they go all in and allow all 8 schools in the conference tournament eventually.

It may be a dumb idea, but just off the top of my head.

I like thinking out of the box. The main problem with this is tickets....

Last night was a complete sellout. The Ivies could play Friday afternoon with their own session. What happens Saturday night? The BE has sold all the tickets. Do we get less tickets so the Ivy schools/fans get some? Are they separate sessions?

I can't see how they work ticket wise.

This would not help the Big East 1 bit. No need at all

Ivy league has no desire to be in the same conversation as any other schools. You could have a conference of Duke, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Michigan, Chicago, and another few high academic schools and the Ivy would still tell them where to shove that idea.

The Palestra looks like they have more fans than the AAC.

Interesting concept, but neither side really benefits from a partnership standpoint. Both conferences have different sets of goals and objectives with regards to its respective athletic programs. The Big East is a conference built on elite men's college basketball, with other strong Olympic sports, in big East coast and Midwest cities, and with a Private/Catholic affiliation. The Ivy League is a conference built on the East coast, heavily, heavily focused on academics, with selected elitism, and offers non-scholarship athletic programs.

There is very little in common in terms of academics and athletics. The only thing that is in common is the East coast-centric mindset.

What could work, if you're trying to get bodies in the Garden to make them happy, would be something with the Patriot league. Great academics (weren't they formed to basically be a 'baby ivory league' for football?), proud for their size athletic history, and probably a fair number of grads within a short drive of NYC.
