Stay at 10 schools and we'll never be better than the ACC. Don't you people have any pride ? For years we had the best conference in the country and now we have the third best . So you don't want those schools in the conference because you think we'll never compete with them ??? that's exactly what you mean. Villanova , Marquette and Georgetown did extremely well in the old Big East and Creighton , Xavier and Butler would also have played well in the old Big East.St. John's ,Providence and Seton Hall got buried in the old Big East because those schools didn't wanna spend the money and hire a good coach . St. John's was preoccupied with modernizing it's campus and completely neglected it's basketball team. I want the best conference and the heck with the round robin. some people on this website wanna add Davidson and St. Louis ???????????????????

Ill leave the rest of that absurdity to the others but this is just so ridiculous. This is reality. The Big East WAS NOT the best conference in the country, and is more or less, exactly the same now.

2002 - Big East 6th
2003 - Big East 4th
2004 - Big East 4th
2005 - Big East 2nd
2006 - Big East 1st
2007 - Big East 5th
2008 - Big East 4th
2009 - Big East 2nd
2010 - Big East 3rd
2011 - Big East 2nd
2012 - Big East 3rd
2013 - Big East 2nd
2014 - Big East 5th
2015 - Big East 2nd
2016 - Big East 3rd
2017 - Big East 3rd

If you did not know that the conference wasn't made up with exactly the same teams, it would be impossible to figure out what is the 'old' Big East and the 'new' Big East. It is just what it is.

Bookmark this. Save it. Whatever. That is the reality, both of the 'then' and the 'now'. The Big East was ONCE the top rated conference in the entire time frame that Pomeroy has historical data.

Although I do not agree with the stance that SJU87 is taking, saying that our conference now is comparable to old BE is a little off too. Granted we are only in year 4. But we've had all of 1 team make the E8 in our first 3 years. The great thing about the old BE is that just about every team contributed and many did very well in March. It wasn't like the old ACC where it was just Duke and Carolina carrying the heavy load most years.

NC's (7):
Nova
G'town
Cuse
UConn (3)
L'ville

FF's (20):
Nova (2)
G'town (4)
PC (1)
SHU (1)
SJU (1)
UCONN (4)
Cuse (4)
WVU (1)
L'ville (2)

E8's (43):
Nova (6)
G'town (8)
PC (2)
SHU (1)
SJU (1)
UCONN (9)
Cuse (6)
WVU (2)
L'ville (4)
Marq. (1)
Pitt (1)
BC (2)

So... in total:
7/33 seasons a NC = 21.2% vs. 1/3 = 33%
20/33 a FF team = 60.6% vs. 1/3 = 33%
43/33 a E8 team = 130.3% vs. 1/3 = 33%

Granted for several years the BE conference had many more teams than we do today. But clearly if we want to compare ourselves to the ACC and the oBE, we need to do better in March collectively. We are a top conference by the RPI and Kenpom #'s. No one can doubt the data. But we need a larger number of us, going deep into the tourney. The oBe had 9 different schools make a FF over 3 decades. And it averaged at least 1 team in the E8 every year. If we can say the same in 25 years then this conference will be one of the all-time greats.

And I 100% reject the notion that it will only occur if we expand. We can be a dominant 10 team conference.

We don't need more schools to be the best conference. We just the teams we have to play well, particularly OOC. There's nobody we can add besides UConn that would give us the branding power the ACC has, but sticking with 10 teams gives us a unique ability to pretty much eliminate deadwood at the bottom of the league. We have a good chance to send 70% of our league to the NCAA Tournament this year. I guarantee the ACC will never hit that mark.

Ken Pom isn't the only measure of data....

forget it- Gumby did a DAMN GOOD Job with his post. I know you want to totally diminish the Old Big East, but it was one of the 2 best conferences in 4 of the 8 years by the RPI. In a 5th year, it was 3rd(that was the year that the MWC was #1 in the RPI). In 2 of those years- BE was #1. In the first 4 years of the New Big East- it's been 4,3,4, and 3. So the Big East would have to be one of the top 2 conferences in the next 4 years to match that. And that's just the RPI. Then you get into the tourney performances.
