NC State Men’s Basketball to Make Change Following Season - N.C. State University Official Press Release - Thursday February 16, 2017
Mark Gottfried will not return as NC State men's basketball coach following the conclusion of the 2016-17 season, Director of Athletics Debbie Yow announced today. Gottfried is in his sixth season leading the Wolfpack.

"Mark and I met today to discuss the future direction of our program," said Yow. "While it has long been my practice to evaluate the body of work at season's end, in reviewing the overall direction of our program, we believe a change in leadership is necessary moving forward."

Plans for the search process for a successor will begin immediately.

Mark Gottfried fired at NC State, will finish season - ESPN - Thursday February 16, 2017
An NC State official told ESPN's Andy Katz that Gottfried asked Yow if he could finish the remainder of the season because of his commitment to the players.

Gottfried, 53, was hired by Yow in 2011 and proceeded to go to the NCAA tournament in each of his first four seasons, including a pair of Sweet 16 appearances. He has an overall record of 122-82 at NC State, and he had three years of base salary -- worth an estimated $2.28 million -- left on his deal.

NC State confirms Mark Gottfried will be fired at season's end - The Dagger - Thursday February 16, 2017
Current Dayton coach Archie Miller, an NC State alum, has been rumored as a possible target for the soon-to-be-vacant position.

I have no idea what Archie is thinking, but my gut feeling is that he will not be interested in working for Debbie Yow. Or taking a pay cut.

After each of the past four seasons, Archie has received very significant pay raises at UD and contract extensions. Expect the same in April 2017.

Early Names to watch in the NC State Coaching Search – Pack Insider - Thursday February 16, 2017
Archie Miller (Dayton)
Would he come? Good question. He is an alumnus. His wife’s family lives about 1.5 hours outside Raleigh. Those are the plusses. We know his dream job is OSU and Thad Matta is having a bad season, but will they fire him? I doubt it. If that job were to open then Archie would take it. That’s pretty much the bottom line. Now, aside from that scenario, would he think about coming to NC State? We’ll have to wait and see, but it’s certainly not off the table if the Wolfpack open up their pocketbook and pay him out (offer the guy $3.5 million/year and make him turn you down.)

The big problem with the NC State coaching job is that NC State sees their rightful place in the ACC as an equal to Duke and North Carolina, and they will fire any coach who doesn’t get them there. Firing a coach in mid-February and making him beg to finish the season is particularly humiliating.

Mark Gottfried started at NC State in 2011-12, and has earned 9 NCAA Tournament units with a 5-4 tournament record.

Archie Miller started at Dayton in 2011-12, and has earned 8 NCAA Tournament units with a 5-3 tournament record.

If Yukon comes back, bring another school in to make it 12. A Dayton, a St. Louis, or whatever best candidate isn't going to devalue this league.

If they went to 11 with UCONN, the best thing would be to wait and see how it was working before adding an arbitrary crap 12th team like Dayton, SLU or anyone not named Notre Dame or Kansas.

The group of crap teams like UD, SLU, etc. will always be there for the taking.

Repeatedly calling Dayton a 'crap team' doesn’t reflect reality, nor does it enhance your credibility. 2016-17 RPI Rankings

Meet the Toughest Team in College Basketball, Who Also Happen to be an NCAA Tournament Team – Barstool Sports - Thursday February 16, 2017
Two seasons ago Dayton played with seven scholarship players after head coach Archie Miller kicked a couple players off the team and advanced to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament. Last year Dayton’s best player was forced to miss half the season due to sexual harassment allegations. They made the NCAA Tournament. This season they had to deal with their expected starting center dying at 20 years old from a heart problem. If that wasn’t enough two of the other bigs suffered injuries early in the season? This group is now in position to make the fourth NCAA Tournament in a row.

If you’re just getting into the season, do yourself a solid and turn on a Dayton game. There’s no team or group in the country that has gone through as much shit as these guys and they are incredibly easy to cheer for (unless you’re an A-10 team or Xavier fan.) This team is starting to find its rhythm and is getting another key piece back with Josh Cunningham, who played 23 minutes against St. Louis.

Isn't Debbie Yow a former commissioner of the A 10?

With Coach K approaching the end of his career, 2-time national champion NC State could be a great opportunity for the right coach.

EDIT: Part 2 added.

Early Names to watch in the NC State Coaching Search (Part 2) – Pack Insider - Monday February 20, 2017

Chis Mack (Xavier)
We haven’t gotten any concrete info that points to Mack being a major candidate for this job, but he does fit the mold of a guy that NC State could be looking at. He’s been very successful at Xavier, taking them to 6 NCAA tournaments in 7 years (including 3 Sweet 16s.) It’s believed that in the next few years Mack could be looking for a more high-profile gig. Should NC State reach out to Mack? Well he’s been extended through 2022, but it’s not like he’s making a ton. As of now he’s making in the $1.5 range, so could $2.5 pull him away? Who knows. One major thing to consider is that Xavier is his Alma-mater, so there are some personal ties to his current school that might make this tough.

I would agree with this. The BE probably doesn't need Dayton, but if Dayton is crap, then so are the 6 current members of the BE not named Xavier, Villanova, GT or Butler, and GT looks to be fading. Dayton's a solid program, and if they were located in Cleveland, or Detroit, they might already be a member.

Good post... As we watch the Big East this year, we see why the conference needs to be bigger. In a year with a bad teams and injuries the Conference has lost some mojo. The empty buildings, the poor long term performances of GT, St Johns and DePaul begs the question, if not UCONN why not Dayton. After Wright, Miller would be the best and hottest young coach in the conference, there arena is electric and they travel better than anyone on the conference. Huge NYC alumni that would fill the empty seats at St Johns and Seton Hall. The natural Rivalry with X would be made for TV and Gus and Raft would make a huge deal out of it. leave you guns at the door, they are a good fit.

I agree with you about Dayton, but let's face facts. Miller has probably already had conversations with NC State. He's probably just waiting to see if Matta is out at Ohio State. Since the guys at Ohio State can read the writing. On the wall, they will probably show Thad the door, realizing that now is the time to move on Miller. Archie Miller is not a reason to go after Dayton.
