1 game tonight in the Big East, the nation's most exciting hoops conference.
St John's at Tulane, 8pm.
I think this is second half of a home and home series. Johnnies won the previous meeting. This would be a nice rebound game win for St John's.. And this isn't your father's Tulane team, you know, the one that was caught point shaving. No, this version of Tulane isn't a total disaster, and is coached by Mike Dunleavy, former Houston Rocket PG and Ed Lauter lookalike. You know Ed Lauter, you've seen Ed Lauter a million times, as a bit actor in King Kong in 1976, or in The Longest Yard, or in Cujo, or reruns of Mannix... yeah, that guy.

actually Tulane is a total disaster-as will often happen for new coaches. They're 1-6- so as many OOC losses as they had last year. Just lost at New Orleans by 15 points.

Mike Dunleavy came out of Nazareth HS in Brooklyn. Was a classmate of my brother, who said that Mike wasn't that good as a younger HS player. Worked incredibly hard to make himself into a HS star, a college player, and eventually an NBA career.

And his son Baker is Jay's right hand man. Expect him to be gobbled up by someone, some time soon. Baker is getting a lot of kudos for the current product on the floor for the Wildcats.

In today's NY Times:
"Dunleavy, 62, and Mullin, 53, will renew their acquaintance Friday night when Tulane (1-6) hosts St. John’s (2-5) in New Orleans. One team will end a five-game losing streak.
Even though Dunleavy is nine years older than Mullin, the men have much in common.
Both are from Brooklyn and played in the N.B.A. Both went on to become Western Conference executives in the N.B.A., Dunleavy as the Los Angeles Clippers’ general manager and Mullin in the front offices of the Golden State Warriors and the Sacramento Kings. Both were eventually hired to restore prominence to a college program."

I love hearing stories like this, hard work paying off. And hey, Ed Lauter is from nearby Nassau County and played hoops in college at CW Post LIU... maybe there is a connection!

Call me crazy, but Johnnies win by double digits tonight. After that last fiasco, they have to be embarrassed, pissed and determined, so that tonight they all come out ready to put together a solid game. Tulane isn't a good team, but it would still be a good step in the right direction.
