CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- The United States Basketball Writers Association has chosen one of Dean Smith's close friends - former Georgetown Hall of Fame coach John Thompson Jr. - as the first recipient of the award named for the late North Carolina coach.

Congratulations to John Thompson Jr. on a well-deserved award. Coach Thompson earned the respect of the Flyer Faithful after handing Dayton a couple of heart-breaking, memorable losses. The first came in an NIT Quarterfinal game at UD Arena on March 14, 1978, when the Hoyas won 71-62.The second came at Pauley Pavilion in an NCAA Tournament Elite 8 game on March 25, 1984, when the Hoyas knocked the Flyers out of the Tournament.
