Georgetown's Italy Trip

I was waiting for someone to open this topic thread...no one did.
Shouldn't have to scour the Marquette trip thread to find Hoya results and comments.

Post away folks.

Hoyas beat Haskur 74-64

Hoyas were lead by Freshman Marcus Derrickson who scored 20 points.

DSR did not play due to minor ankle injury. Bradley Hayes did not play due to a thumb injury, both will be fine for the season. Hoyas also with Akou Agau who will not be be available till 2nd semester.

Very frustrating that our Athletic Department is so behind the times. Marquette get's full live streams of their games and we only get 15 minutes of live video via periscope. Sure it's better than nothing, but if Marquette can have all that it sucks we can't get it too.

Here's the text of the release posted above for those too lazy:

"Rome, Italy - Georgetown used a 17-0 run in the fourth period to erase a four-point deficit and beat Haukar Basket, 74-64, at Arena Atletico Felicio in Rome on Sunday evening, the first of four games the Hoyas will play during their 10-day trip to Italy.
The Hoyas arrived in Rome on Saturday morning and spent that day and early Sunday touring the historic city, but arrived at Arena Atletico Felicio prepared for their first game of the trip, against a first division professional team from Iceland.
Freshman forward Marcus Derrickson (Bowie, Md./National Christian Academy [Md.]) scored a game-high 20 points -- including 16 in the second half -- and grabbed eight rebounds, while junior forward Reggie Cameron (Hackensack, N.J./Hudson Catholic) scored 13 points to lead the Hoyas.
Georgetown led, 34-29, at the break and consecutive 3-poiniters from sophomore guard Tre Campbell (Washington, D.C./St. John's College HS [D.C.]) pushed the lead to 40-31 in the opening minutes of the third period. After a layup from Derrickson made the score 42-33, Haukar used a 9-0 spurt to pull within 42-40 on a 3-pointer from Kristjian Sverisson with 4:47 to play.
Free throws from sophomore forward Isaac Copeland (Raleigh, N.C./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) pushed the lead back to 44-40, but tied the game at 44-all and then took a 49-47 lead after a 3-pointer and a layup from Njalmar Stefansson. Haukar led 50-49 at the end of the third quarter and pushed its lead to 57-53 on a 3-pointer from Stephen Madison early in the fourth quarter.
That's when the Hoyas -- keyed by Derrickson -- really took over. The freshman hit a three from the win to pull within a point and Campbell followed with another, giving GU the lead for good, 59-57, with 6:27 to play. That was the start of a 17-0 run as Derrickson hit 3-pointers on three-straight possessions -- one assisted by Copeland and two more assisted by freshman center Jessie Govan (Manhasset, N.Y./Wings Academy) -- and Georgetown took a 68-57 lead. A jumper from Copeland capped the run and gave the Hoyas a 70-57 lead.
Sophomore forward L.J. Peak (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) and Copeland each hit a pair of free throws in the final minute to close out the 74-64 win.
The Hoyas had taken a 21-14 lead after the first quarter and led 34-29 at the break.
Derrickson hit 8-of-12 shots from the floor -- including 4-of-6 from 3-point land -- to lead the Hoyas. Copeland finished with 13 points, six rebounds and two assists, while Peak added nine points and Campbell had nine points and four rebounds. Govan finished with six points, five rebounds and three assists.
Georgetown shot 41.9 percent from the floor (26-of-62), including 40.0 percent from long distance (12-of-30) and hit only 58.8 percent of its free throws (10-of-17). GU held a 41-37 advantage in rebounds and handed out 13 assists.
The team plays next on Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m. local time (12:30 p.m. ET) against Dream Team Select, a team of Italian professionals from the first, second and third divisions. "

"Rome, Italy - Four Georgetown University men's basketball players scored in double figures, led by 18 points from freshman forward Marcus Derrickson (Bowie, Md./Brewster Academy [N.H.]), and nine different players scored at least five points as the Hoyas cruised to a 95-36 win over the Italy All-Stars on Tuesday night at Arena Atletico Felicio.
It was the second-straight win to open a 10-day tour of Italy for the Hoyas, who depart Rome on Wednesday morning and travel to Florence, stopping to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa along the way.
Prior to Tuesday night's game, Head Coach John Thompson III and the team took time for a photo with Kenneth Hackett, United States Ambassador to the Holy See (the Vatican).
The Hoyas took the lead immediately on a layup from sophomore forward L.J. Peak (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) and never looked back, taking a 21-10 advantage after the first period. The second period was a bit sluggish to start, but the Blue & Gray outscored Italy 20-8 over the final 6:06 and took a 41-18 lead at the break on a layup from by freshman center Jessie Govan (Manhasset, N.Y./Wings Academy), assisted by senior Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, Md./Archbishop Carroll [D.C.]).
Derrickson, who scored six points in the first half, scored 12 points in the final 20 minutes. Georgetown outscored Italy 33-10 in the third quarter to push the lead to 74-28 and used a 21-8 fourth quarter for the final win. Derrickson hit 6-of-12 shots from the floor to finish with 18 points, while grabbing five rebounds.
Freshman forward Kaleb Johnson (Martinsville, Va./Carlisle School) scored 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had six steals off the bench. The Georgetown reserves combined for 46 points, 25 rebounds, 10 assists and 12 steals in the game. Sophomore forward Isaac Copeland (Raleigh, N.C./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) chipped in nine points, three rebounds and three steals, sophomore forward Paul White (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) added nine points, two rebounds and three assists and sophomore forward Trey Mourning (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) added six points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Junior forward Reggie Cameron (Hackensack, N.J./Hudson Catholic) started and scored 14 points with five rebounds, while Peak added 10 points, two rebounds, three assists and seven steals. Govan finished with seven points and seven rebounds.
The Hoyas finished the game shooting 45.7 percent from the floor (37-of-81), 25.9 percent from three-point land (7-of-27) and were 93.3 percent from the free throw line (14-of-15). GU held a 52-33 advantage in rebounding, handed out 16 assists and recorded 21 steals.
Georgetown plays next on Thursday, Aug. 20 against BC Atletas (Lithuania) in Florence, Italy. "

If you go to periscope on your smart phone you can watch about 15 minutes of each game and post game interviews with JT3.

Marcus Derrickson has lead the team in scoring in both games. DSR hasn't played yet in Italy. Tre Campbell only played like 9 minutes in the last game due to cramps.

This hoyas team is scary deep. We are going to be very good.

I'm pretty sure this is the same team Marquette played that is on their schedule as Vencenzia select. Whatever they call themselves they're just a ragtag group of Italian players from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd divisions. Likely more of the latter than the former based on the scores:
Marquette won 102-66 and Hoyas won 95-36.

Although it's fun to win all of your exhibition games on a foreign tour, playing a good team and losing does a lot more to help a team improve than blowing out a bunch of no-hopers by 50 or 60 points.

It looks like the Hoya's offense and rebounding were clicking, but late-game defense came up short:

Georgetown Falls Short Against BC Atletas, 90-85, in Italy

BC Atletas trailed 66-62 after a dunk from freshman center Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y./Wings Academy). BC Atletas then used a 14-5 run to take an 80-67 lead with 5:20 to play in the game. The lead grew to 16 points, 87-71, when Atletas hit a 3-pointer with 3:47 left.

Georgetown finished the game shooting 49.3 percent from the floor (34-of-69), including 25.0 percent from 3-point land (3-of-12), and 73.7 percent from the free throw line (14-of-19). GU out-rebounded BC Atletas 39-33, handed out 19 assists and committed only eight turnovers.

It's good to see their youngsters doing well, but as you did last season when Georgetown was playing and beating up on cream puffs, you take too much out of these type of games.

I think they'll field a good team, but I also see some defensive issues and inconsistent interior play.
