You are counting wrong. 1989, 1990,1991,1992,1993,1994,1995,1996,1997,1998,1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015. Count those up. It is 27. We don't start counting at -1 or even 0, counting always begins at 1.

by your logic, we would be at year 3 of the Big East then. 2013-14, 2014-15.

And regardless, if you use your logic, that makes his point even stronger- it'd be the best 3 year period in 26 or 27 years then.

Even under your logic, it would still be 26 years. I wasn't arguing his point, just pointing out a factual error.

I think it's semantics. It'd be 26 seasons.

yes I meant seasons. When I think of something in 1990, I think of it as 25 years ago.

Regardless, it's been a LONG time since DePaul had a 3 year stretch as good as Leitao had.

It's remarkable to me how folks on here think that the Mullin hire can't fail, while the Leitao hire has no chance of working.

Yeah, it is weird. The Mullin hire could be a miserable failure, which the Leitao hire is unlikely to be. The Mullin hire could also be an enormous success, which the Leitao hire is unlikely to be. From extensive coaching history, Leitao is clearly somewhere in the middle, but due to no coaching history, Mullin could easily occupy one of the extremes. I don't understand why more people aren't saying that Leitao should at least be better than Purnell, just as I don't understand why more people aren't saying that Mullin could end up being worse than Lavin (my bet is he'll be better, but still).

DePaul clearly took the safe bet, while St. John's took the risky bet, but a lot of people are treating it like DePaul resigned themselves to failure, while St. John's took the safe bet.

The reaction of more than one Chicago media type summed up:

"Leitao is the wrong choice for DePaul. They screwed up the hiring process. They played it safe. They don't care about men's basketball being any good... but hey, none of that is Dave Leitao's fault. What a great guy, and he's a pretty good coach, too. Hell, he could have DePaul in the NIT next year, and maybe the NCAA Tournament the year after."

What... the... heck???

I could be totally off base by stating this, but if DePaul had cleaned house (Purnell and JLP), hired a new AD, and that new AD hired Leitao, I would think that DePaul would actually be getting some good press out of it. I think all the negativity is coming directly from JLP, who certainly has warranted it with regards to the men's basketball program. There's no mistaking that Leitao had successful teams at DePaul while he was here. It's the person that hired and is promoting him that rubs people the wrong way.

Agree/disagree?

I agree- but that still doesn't mean he can't do a good job. It's like folks think he's going to totally flop- and given how he performed there, that's not all that likely.

It's just amazing the difference in the 2 programs hire's perceptions right now. Like folks think that the DePaul hire is just awful- with no chance of working- and the St John's hire is perfect- and has no chance of failing.

As a DePaul University alumnus, I think DePaul rehiring Dave Leitao as their new Head Coach is a good move as in his former three seasons at DePaul he made two NITs and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. I remember the pep rallies he would have in the atrium of the Student Center on DePaul's Lincoln Park Campus. It is also vital that Dave Leitao keeps Assistant Coach Billy Garrett on DePaul's coaching staff so PG Billy Garrett Jr. stays with the program.
