Lavs thinks Arch is POY

Postby redmen9194 » Fri Feb 27, 2015 12:16 pm

During the pre-game presser for the Georgetown Game, Lavs was asked about Dom Pointer being a possible POY. He said he can't vote for his own player but thought that Dom and Arcidiacono were the two players he thought were the best of the group. After speaking about Dom he said the Big East is a tough league and Nova just keeps winning - they don't lose. And Arch is the quarterback of the team and just keeps setting them up to win. So looks like Arch has one vote in for POY.

He's the only one. Looks like Hilliard will get it.

There was a push for Dunn for a while, but it has to be Hilliard.

I think Lavs was trying to game the system to try to split the Nova votes in his player favor.

I don't think so. Pointer is really good, but he wasn't getting votes, or at least enough to make any difference.

New York Post thinks Dom should get the nod.

http://nypost.com/2015/02/26/st-johns-p ... -the-year/

Busting Brackets breaks down the #'s and shows why Dom is a more valuable player.

http://bustingbrackets.com/2015/02/25/s ... ayer-year/

Take a look at how Pointer’s numbers stack up against the rest of the conference…

Field Goal Percentage: .536 (1st)
2-point Field Goals Made: 146 (1st)
Win Shares: 4.7 (1st)
Defensive Win Shares: 2.7 (1st)
Player Efficiency Rating: 25.6 (2nd)
Blocks/BPG: 72/2.6 (2nd/3rd)
Steals/SPG: 57/2.0 (3rd)
Rebounds/RPG: 212/7.6 (4th)
Points/PPG: 382/13.6 (8th/9th)

A simple glance at the numbers makes it hard to ignore Pointer’s status as the most dynamic player in the conference. He’s the league’s most efficient volume scorer, which is especially impressive when considering the unlikelihood of a 54% shooter playing Pointer’s game of challenging drives to the basket and difficult hanging jump shots.

I'm sure you expected someone from the Nova fanbase to come on here and defend Hilliard. I think SDP is a terrific player. Of all the SJU players, I appreciate his enthusiasm for the game and his effort the most. Here's the problem with the data presented... First you have to judge conference games only.

1. Hilliard leads the league in 3 pt. FG's made.

2. FG%. Hilliard is shooting an amazing 61% effective FG% in conference. SDP is 52%. So advantage Hilliard by a lot.

3. Guys like SDP, Henton and Dunn never come off the floor so you can expect that they are going to rack up some stats. Hiliard averages about 29 min/game. Most of the others average 36 min or more / game. So instead of looking at points per game, look at pts. per minute, and you'll see how terrific Hiliard is.
Hilliard - .572
Henton - .535
Harrison - .508
Gibbs - .481
Dunn - .460
Pointer - .419
So if both played 40 minutes you could expect Hilliard to score a whopping 6.1 more pts. per game or about 110 more pts in conference for the year. That is significant.

4. The best case for SDP can be made on the defensive side of the court. Pointer is a terrific defensive player, he hustles, blocks shots and gets steals. Hilliard's steal rate per minute, though, is 30% higher than SDP's. He doesn't rebound or block shots nearly as well, but he is a terrific on the ball defensive player. He took Henton out of his game and R. Jones struggled mightily to score in the Butler game. Hilliard can really defend. So slight nod to SDP but the gap is not nearly as wide as you'd think.

5. Villanova is in first place, 5 games ahead of SJU, who currently sit in 5th. Like it or not that's a factor.

So there you have it...

Thats a big assumption that his numbers would increase. It's more likely that he gets tired and his numbers could drop. If he could continue to put up those stats for 36-40 minutes a game then he would be playing those minutes. Maybe when he plays that many minutes he gets tired and his shots start hitting the front of the rim and his % starts to drop. You can't take away from a guy because he plays 40 minutes. If Hillard was the best he would be out there for 30+ minutes. For me thats a negative that he averages less than 30 minutes a game. He misses a quarter of the game and SDP doesn't.

That's a silly statement that Hiiliard is somehow less of a player because he plays less minutes. Nova has not played a single digit game at home in conf yet this year. When up 25 in the 2nd H should JW just keep him in or should he get Frosh Phil Booth in the game so he can develop? JW is willing to get bench players involved because they too are very good players. Josh Hart would start on most teams in this conf.

And suggesting that he would tire out if he played more? Did I hear that right? Did he tire when he went for 31 vs Butler and hit the game winning 3 with 2 secs left? No. He did not. If anything the additional time may allow for him to get in the groove more and be more effective. Weak argument redman.

Points per minute matter when 1 player plays 9 mins more / game. It's like baseball...who is the better player the one who get 201 hits in 600 AB's or the one who get 200 hits in 500 AB's?

Best player is on the best team this year. Hilliard will win in a landslide.
