FT numbers through the midpoint of the season. No surprise that the top half is on the positive end of calls. Villanova with the largest positive margin at 48; DePaul with the worst negative margin at -89.

Team FTA's Opponent FTA's FT Differential
Villanova 223 175 48
Butler 268 231 37
Providence 273 234 39
Georgetown 302 279 23
Xavier 284 274 10
DePaul 233 322 -89
Seton Hall 248 257 -9
St. John's 196 217 -21

Equally interesting is to see which teams are in games in which a lot of fouls get called:

Georgetown - 581
Xavier - 558
DePaul - 555
Providence - 507
Seton Hall - 505
Butler - 499
Creighton - 428
At. John's - 413
Villanova - 398
Marquette - 339

Bill, your list isn't really surprising. I don't know how many Xavier games I've watched where I was wondering what the hell was up with the refs, because of all the fouls called.

Nova is notorious for this.

A couple of simple observations to account for this... Fouls in the last 2 mins of a game when teams try to catch up May account for some of the disparity. It would be logical to assume that teams winning towards the end of games get fouled more often. Also teams like PC, Nova, Gtown, Butler attack the basket more than teams like CU and DePaul. These teams also are simply better defensively where they play more fundamentally sound D without fouling.

There is definitely some logic to the numbers and you bring up some very good points. Overall, I feel the officiating has been well balanced thus far. The only real outlier to me is DePaul's differential. The only way to explain them winning 6 games in conference is their 3 point shooting. Because it's hard to win when you give your opponent 89 more attempts to score than you.

Nova also plays to draw fouls. Both between their active style of play, and by actively seeking out calls (shooting into a jumping defender).

I don't think Nova is particularly 'floppy' (at least any more than other teams), they just mold their game to take advantage of the rules.
