BIG EAST v. F5

Postby redmen9194 » Wed Oct 22, 2014 1:45 pm

This season, I will track the Big East as against the F5 conferences - ACC, SEC, Big 12, Big 10 and Pac 12. We have 35 set match ups with these five leagues, not counting potential match-ups in the later rounds of the various early tournaments. I will have a separate thread running for our record against teams in the 25 (both ESPN and AP). Again, I am not including the A-10, the American, or any other conference out there as this is just to track our progress with the F5. The Big East has certainly scheduled better in the non-con from last season and hopefully we all grab some nice wins. We are a few weeks off from the start, but Marquette vs. Ohio State will start us off on 11/18. Good luck gang - GO BIG EAST!

I'm sorry but I think the records vs the actual top 25 is 1000000 times more important than vs the P5. You can not tell me for instance that last year Georgeton's win over VCU meant less than a win over a 20-13 Kansas St team. Or if someone beats Gonzaga that would mean less. In basketball you can have top 25 teams in obscure conferences that you just can't have in football. Similarly a win over say Boston College is pretty much garbage. Gonzaga, VCU, Wichita St matter no matter how much you want to deny that.

Thanks. These are always interesting. Sorry for our 1-3 likely record.

That said, as soon as we play an A10 or AAC member somebody will pop in trying to track that in the same thread. Could we avoid that this year, everybody? Make a different thread if you want.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Case in point- preseason top 25 this year there are 6 teams ranked outside the P5(not including the Big East). UConn, VCU, Wichita, San Diego St, Gonzaga, and SMU. Last year there were 8. To say because a BC has a P5 label means they are more important than any of those teams is frankly insulting.

Yeah last year it got messy. I will do this thread and a ranked teams thread separately. Anyone looking to track us against the A-10 or anyone else just start another one. It will be less confusing.

To be a shoe-in for the tourney I think SJ has to win two of Gonzaga/Cuse/Duke. Or win 1 of those 3 and do really well in conference i.e. beating Nova twice while ranked. If we beat 2 of Duke/Cuse/Gonzaga, it would really open some eyes. We are long overdue for a Cuse upset, always seem to play Duke tough, and we are also due for payback against Gonzaga from 2011. Time to start winning marquee match ups instead of being thankful for a 5 point loss instead of a 20 point loss.

I second this. Can we rename this BIG EAST v. Football 5 or F5 (Name Stu Jackson suggested earlier), or CFP5 (College Football Playoff 5)?

Also, notkirk, on quick glance it looks good to me. I'm sure Wildjays can confirm.

Agreed. Using that term seems to convey they are superior in hoops. It should be called the F5 for Football 5. That's the only main difference: football. As long as we keep recruiting at this level we will be great some years. Last year was disappointing but we still got 4 teams in and SJ missed by the skin of their teeth. There will be years when Nova, G'Town, Xavier, Creighton, Marquette, etc. are all good at once and we will see teams like SHU, Butler, SJU, PC go in their mini cycles. It's simple: teams need to step up. I'm talking about SJ, Butler, SHU, etc. If SHU doesn't do well with IW and SJ gets Briscoe and still doesn't make tourneys, it will be an epic failure. Time to convert recruiting talent to tourney berths and deep runs. I truly think last year was just a down year and this year is a rebuilding year for many, but give it a few years for things to settle and I think we can have 3-4 teams ranked consistently and 5 in the tourney.
