Power 5 "autonomy" vote discussion

So what does the big east do if the power five leagues decide to vote for autonomy from the NCAA? I assume we go forward providing whatever they do correct? But only for men's basketball? That is where things get tricky for me.

They should just convert sports to jobs only offered to students of the university. For those sports who bring in no revenue, then the sports don't pay. For those sports that do bring in revenue. Pay the players what they are worth.

There are all types of student-only jobs that operate on simple economics. Don't know why sports needs to be any different.

The model you describe is basically capitalism. I'm okay with that but it ain't happening. Can schools offer different benefits to one sport but not others?

Yea, capitalism has a pretty good track record. I don't know if schools can, but they should be able to. I believe they pay some research assistants more than others etc.

It's official now: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/co ... /13716349/

Now we'll see what kind of things they'll do and how far the Big East is willing to go to keep up.

Seton Hall AD Pat Lyons:
As far as the Big Five and autonomy, I am interested to see how this is going to play out. As a Big East institution we plan to do whatever we can do remain one of the best conferences in the country. We do not want to be at a disadvantage.”

Q: So you think the Big East will opt-in to the stipends and other Power Five reforms?
I’d be very surprised if we don’t do what the best conferences, the Big Five, do. That’s who we believe our competition is, who we want to be around.” “We want to be the best basketball conference in the country, and we’re not going to do anything that’s puts us at a disadvantage in that respect

I'm glad the AD made those statements. I think the Big East needs to be proactive letting recruits know we plan to do exactly what the P5 are offering.

I think we'll be fine. I'm interested to see how this impacts the a10 though.

They have a much larger range in terms of school size and endowment. Vcu and slu for example have billion+ endowments while other schools are only in the 50 million range. How does the a-10 manage these different situations? Will these smaller schools be willing to take in the burden of stipends and what not? Will the larger schools have their hands tied by the smaller ones? Maybe they just kick out the smaller schools who are unwilling to adopt the new rules?

Granted this all comes from the mind of a guy who knows nothing about this
