Todd Mayo and Marquette part ways. The over/under on the amount of games he played under Wojo was zero.

I can't say that I (or any casual MU fan) is shocked, but I am a little surprised it happened in late July. If anyone watched Wojo's press conference, you could clearly see that Todd was falling asleep and some of the teammates were nudging him to wake him up.

Marquette will have 9 players to suit up when they open their season. Ellenson and Levin are both out for redshirt transfer years, and Fischer is out until December until he becomes eligible (transferred last season).

It will be a challenge for sure, but there is still some really good young talent on the team (Burton, Johnson, Du. Wilson). Throw in Carlino (transfer from BYU), you could have a sleeper team by the time Fischer comes back.

At first I was shocked, but he is 24 years old and probably ready to make some money. Good luck to him.

So what happens with the open scholarship? In cases like this where it's almost too late to fill, I like to see a walk on get the ride.

Well, this season was already going to be a little rough. Definitely a loss. That said, the extra experience should be good for the young players. Hopefully the long term benefits outweigh the immediate loss.

Coaches will typically leave the scholarship unused for the first semester in case another mid-year transfer hits the market (like Fischer) and then would give it to a walk-on second semester. That's at least how Xavier has done it in the past with 1 scholarship open I believe.

As for Mayo, I think this is addition by subtraction, even for a team low on players.

I'm sure Marquette fans will be split on this one, very much like when Mark Lyons left Xavier. Talented player with a bit of baggage. Some will be upset because of losing talent, others will be ready to move on.

Mayo was a very good guard. He played extremely well against Xavier in the tourney. My question would be did Buzz leaving have anything to do with this? He and Buzz seemed to get along well in the few games I watched on TV. Perhaps a Warrior fan could comment as to this being the case or not. Sometime the relationship of a coach and a player is more important than anything else.

Mayo had some disciplinary issues under Buzz. I doubt that he would have stayed even if Buzz was still here. There was a rumor that Mayo had cut some of his course load two years ago in order to preserve his gpa, but he has been unable to make up the difference. Supposedly he would not meet the academic progress requirement (I believe it is 60% completed minimum) for this season. That's what I have heard but I can't say that it is 100% accurate.
