Big East revenue distribution explained

Creighton AD Bruce Rasmussen explained how the league is weighting distribution of 25% of revenue for performance. That's a great idea in my opinion.

The league sets aside 25 percent of its net revenue into what Rasmussen called a performance incentive package. Schools get bonuses for making and advancing in NCAA tournament play, for finishing in the top four at the conference tournament, for having an RPI in the top 60 or for making marked improvement in the RPI.

“It’s heavily weighted toward men’s basketball,” Rasmussen said. “But for soccer and volleyball making the NCAA tournament, that was a $25,000 bonus. It’s higher in men’s and women’s basketball.

“Having the performance incentives really helped us from a financial standpoint. In the Valley, we got an expense allowance for being in the (NCAA) tournament, but revenues were shared pretty much equally. In the Big East, it’s weighted much more towards the teams that make it.”

Rasmussen declined to say specifically how much Creighton earned in bonuses last season. When asked if the amount approached seven figures, Rasmussen nodded.

Agreed, pay for performance is the way it should be.

I'd just like to know how much it differs between sports. Obviously men's basketball is going to be a much higher incentive than any other sport. It would just be interesting to see how it breaks down by sport.

Not sure of the actual breakdown, but the Big East regards the following sports as being "core" or "strategic":

1. Men's Bball.
2. Women's Bball.
3. Men's Soccer.
4. Baseball.
5. Women's Volleyball.

Obviously, the conference and each school wants to be strong across the board in all sports offered, but those 5 are prioritized.

This is nothing new. The Big East always operated where revenues were distributed on performance. Mike Tranghese used to say the Big East was capitalist and the ACC was socialist.
