So what kind of commitment does he owe them now?...if a bigger school comes calling in 2 or 3 years once everyone forgets about this, does he bolt?

i can count on one hand the coaches that turn down the $$$ to stay at a small school they love. i can't count the 99.9% other coaches who chase the $$$. I am absolutely not saying there is anything wrong with this, it is just the way it is.

Maybe Masiello feels indebted and proves me wrong, but I doubt it. The past is the best predictor of the future.

I agree with this 100% in almost all cases, but this is a very unique situation. In most cases, up-and-coming small school coach leaves for the big time program and that's that...How many instances can you name where small school coach had one foot out the door and for whatever reason didn't get the job/offer was rescinded, a controversy ensued and was made public and small school let the coach come back?...I can't think of any.

Manhattan's a program where he could probably leave, get canned at his new job after five years, and then come back and be the coach at Manhattan because no one better is walking through that door.

Prior to Masiello's predecessor at Manhattan, former Pitt assistant Barry Rohrssen, Manhattan actually had a series of very good coaches who made them a power in the MAAC for 15 years. Steve Lappas turned the program around and won the MAAC championship before he left. Fran Fraschilla continued the MAAC titles and brought them to the NCAA tournament and an upset of Oklahoma in 1995. With booby Gonzalez, it was more of the same and an upset of Florida in 2004. Manhattan hasn't really had trouble coming up with good coaches for the most part. If Masiello were to get canned at his new job, chances are that Manhattan would have moved on and someone else would be winning there.
