Bill Cords has previously hired three assistant coaches for the MU job off of major coaching trees.

Kevin O'Neill (Lute Olson)
Tom Crean (Tom Izzo)
Buzz Williams (Tom Izzo)

All three went to at least the Sweet 16. I'm assuming Cords knows what he's doing here. Welcome Wojo.

My gut reaction is that you don't get promoted to or named as Associate Head Coach at Duke without having shown some coaching talent and contributing to the program.

We'll see what happens, but I say congratulations to Marquette!

Good solid hire.
And it has the added benefit of ESPN blowhards gushing about a Duke guy.
Win-win.
Congrats MU.

Marquette immediately goes from the toughest team in the conference to the biggest bunch of floppers. At least they will master the intimidating floor slap.

reading one of Jeff Goodman's tweets- one big connection with Wojo and Marquette- Former Marquette player Doc River's son played at Duke and loved Wojo.

Even with success at MU, I don't necessarily see him returning to Duke as head coach when K retires. There are enough other guys in the Duke coaching tree that could be hired... Amaker, Collins, Capel, Dawkins. No reason to think that this won't be a long term hire.

I'm liking this choice a lot the more I think of it. Youth, energy, a pinch of obnoxiousness and enough personality that will create fan interest.

Meanwhile, what's going on with Boston College...? Reports say that Amaker is out, Hopkins is out, Schmidt at St Bona is out. Right now, Skerry of Towson (good potential) and Jim Christian (Ohio U? is this the URI/ TCU/ Kent State guy?)... their list is shrinking.
